93 yj 4.0 5 speed manual. Just installed 4 inch rc lift. Suspension is stiff, I jump on back tailgate and it barely moves up and down. Front is a little softer but still pretty stiff. Shackles are sitting straight up and down in front and in back they are at about 60 degrees I'd say( pointing towards front of vehicle). So question is, is it common that the ride is very stiff? Will it soften up? What can I do to soften it up? This is my daily driver. Also there's a lot of bump
Steer now... Any ideas for a correction on
That would
Be great as well. Thanks
Guys

How tight did you crank the shackle bolts? When we did our first lift it was stiff as a board. Overtorqued the shackle bolts. Loosened them to 65 ft lbs and the ride was MUCH better. X2 on ditching the track bars, that'll help the ride as well.

Ditch the trac bars, losen the shackle bolts and make sure they are greased. Adjust your tire pressure to the correct amount. Do a search on the tire chalk test to get an idea of the correct pressure. Here's a hint, if your running over 25psi on a 33" or larger tire, you are over inflated.

x2 on the shakle bolts and removing both trac bars...i installed a 4" RC lift a while ago. It was a rough ride for about a month or so before I ditched both trac bars. Still not the smoothest ride, but MUCH better than when I first installed and way better than the shot stock stuff I replaced

Another Rough Country thread. It doesnt matter how many times hundreds of people tell them they will regret it they just have to save the $200. The real answer to how to make it ride better is ditch the RC springs and get something that is not garbage. Good quality reasonably priced lifts would be BDS(Which I run), OME(I have heard nothing but rave reveiws about), and RE(I used to run these they ride very nice as well). Rough COuntry is not only crap but it is the worst of the crap.Spend the extra $200 and do it right. In a few years you will any way when you get tired of the crap RC calls a lift and you will buy something that is made with quality. Then at that point the $500 you spent on the RC lift was wasted.

Well sir, I did a TON of research and the majority of the people who have the rc lift are actually very happy with it. Everyone said it was a great kit and for the price you cant beat it. I came on here looking for advice and to see if I had maybe installed it incorrectly... Keep your opinions to yourself, if I had asked about quality of lifts then that's a different story, it's already installed so your previous post was a complete waste of time.

To previous posters, I greased all shackles and bushings. I waited till full weight was on vehicle to torque bolts. I just retorqued them to a lesser 75 lbs like suggested. Drove it and it's still a bit rough but maybe a little better. I'll probably go ahead and remove the track bars front and back as long as it's okay for a dd and highway driving, I'll do a little more research on that. What do the steering stabilizers do? Rough country has one that I think is like 30 bucks and is recommended with the install of their lift?

Carralo1 - don't sweat it buddy. you're going to get LOTS of negatives about the RC lift...

if you're anything like me, I didn't know there was this awesome place to get advice and info called JeepForum.com till AFTER i had already went the cheap route and installed the RC lift. (wish i would have done the research) -- BUT, it's on my YJ now, so I'm making the best of what I got...i think you'll be happy with it for the most part once it settles in.

Yep, whenever Rough Country is mentioned the Jeep snobs show up to turn up their noses at your choice. The same thing goes on at AR15.com, where if you mention buying a Rock River Arms or Olympic, all the gear *****s come out of the woodwork and heap scorn on you for not shelling out 2x as much or more for a Colt, LMT, or Larue that won't blow up on you the first time you pull the trigger.

I have an RC 4" lift and it works well for everything I do with the Jeep - which is everything but rock crawling. Trail riding, mud bogging, 60-65mph on the interstate with no track bars or swaybar, it does everything I want and need it to do. I can grab the roll bar and rock the Jeep 4-5" up & down. I can drive a tire up onto a rock and stuff that 33x10.5x15 KM2 right up to the front fender, with the opposite rear touching the wheel arch opening, and the other 2 tires solidly on the ground. I still want to loosen up my shackle & hanger bolts a bit, leaving just enough torque so I can't pull a piece of paper from between the flat washer & shackle. Before too long I'll install greasable shackles and poly bushings for even smoother articulation.

So I say go ahead and enjoy your RC-equipped Jeep, learn through others' experience and your own, and decide for yourself if your lift does what you want it to do. Oh yeah - check the torque of your U-bolts and ensure that the bump stop extensions are pointed a little "hangerward" of center, because as the springs compress the axle and extensions will move toward the shackles. If the extensions are centered they could conceivably hit the shackle side of the bump stops and cause the axle to shift farther toward the shackles. If your rear tires are scrubbing your wheel openings, check your bump stop extensions.

It stabilizes the steering... It is a piss poor bandaid for bump steer. You should check all your steering components to make sure the bushings aren't worn or loose or gone. Lol.

And there are literally a hundred threads about RC suspensions and for people who frequent the forums, seeing another clogging it up is frustrating. Also, re torque your shackle bolts to lower then 60 with lock nuts and ditch the track bars for sure. Even with the extension brackets they bid the suspension when it flexes over bumps and causes the ride to be worse.

I had the same issue with my lift. The PO had overtightened EVERYTHING and the suspension didn't budge. With myself, my wife and the dog in the jeepmwe couldn't get it to budge at all. I ditched the sway bars, the panhard bar, all that crap. Took every shackle and spring perch apart, greased it and put it all back together and torqued it to 60 ftlbs with nylon lock nuts. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It was night and day!

I don't think anyone here will steer you in a wrong or dangerous direction. If they tried, there are enough "Veterans" and "Old Timers" to keep all the idiotic Bull$hit to a minimum.

You can get RE AAL's. 60$ a set. Take an RC leaf out and put the RE one in. It replaces the one right below the main. It will serve two purposes. Soften the ride and keep the springs from sagging a little longer. I do however have a hard time beleiving you researched and many people told you they were good springs. There are threads on here daily complaining about RC lifts and another huge one full of complaints. One search had me running when I was looking at RC. Your on a forum be ready for opinions and people to tell you the real problem and to be honest. I will book mark this thread and check it in a year. As for the RE AAL's I have one set never used. You can have them just cover the shipping.

remove the track bars.. O know ppl said so alread bu the more that tell you the bettery ou will feel Im sure... like Anti Im UP there over 10 of lif, no tracks and no sways.... remove the sway at your own descrition....

to get a way better ride, remove the RC springs and replace them with something of quality..... which would be anything other then those...

If liking quality and something that does what it claims then yes I am a snob. If I don't want crap that I am going to have to replace every year then yes I am a snob. BTW you just called the large majority of this board snob because we know better than to use the crap RC calls springs. Why is it there are 3 rough country threads going right now but none complaining about the.lifts us snob have. Hmmmmm makes you think huh?
I guess you are another that will say anything to feel better about the crap you bought and call a lift.

You do realize that the vast majority of D35s that get wheeled pretty darn hard HAVEN'T grenaded themselves, right? Strong? No. Strong enough for many Jeepers? Apparently so. I am planning an 8.8 swap but my D35 has never made me decide to look for an easier trail or back off the throttle.

I get a hair over 18 mpg highway in my 4.2l YJ. I don't drive it for mileage, my driving style is what you might call "spirited."

i put 4 inch rc lift on my yj. hated it with a passion. but didnt have any more money, so loosened the bolts on shackles to 45 lbs. took off both trac bars left on my front sway bar. i have 2500 miles on the jeep now and the ride is 200 percent better. I drive it at 85 miles an hour all day on the highways and drive in the twisties in arkansas and have had no problems with no track bars. My wife and I are both in our 60's so it cant be to ruff because we will take off on a sat morning and ride all day long.

That'd be me bud. Freeway to and from
School three days a week only, I managed to get 22 on one tank and 21 on a few others. It's 30 miles hwy and 3 miles stop and go. But that was driving 55 with the truckers. I'm normally at around 16.
