Is there any reason someone would add a lock/unlock pull switch into the cab of a yj? i'm looking at one that has it and am not sure why, unless they were trying to get better gas mileage.

it's the red button on the bottom left of the pic. you push the button and pull out to lock.

Get rid of the vacumn control???? (sorry I have a TJ) but dont YJ's have a vacumn disconnect?

It is to get rid of the vaccuum system that does the same thing on a stock YJ but is prone to leaks and malfunctions which cause it to not engage the front axle when put into 4wd.

I assume its just a cable operated deal they replaced it with, thats what a lot of guys use. Some also get rid of the actuator all together, but that requires either locking the shift collar in the axle housing in the engaged position or replacing with a one piece long side shaft.

thanks for the quick replies. so, this may be a benefit to me.
Its not a bad thing, no. Just make sure thats actually what it is. With some PO's you never can tell.

Could also be a cable actuated locker, but its much more likely its just a replacement for the vaccuum actuation on the front axle.

Carrying this a little further, can the YJ D30 be modded to use locking hubs? I am willing to get the one piece Cherokee axle but I really dont want the axles, dif and driveshaft spinning constantly. Is a CJ style D30 swap my only option or can I trade out spindles and associated hardware?

I really dont mind getting out and locking the hubs as if it even remotely looks like I will need 4WD I do this before I need it. I would lock the hubs as soon as I drove thru the gate on my hunting lease and leave em locked all weekend but thats just putting around at slow speeds.

there are a couple ways to go. there are a couple kits like the one from warn that converts to a manually locking hub. you can do a cj or any other locking hub inner/outer knuckle swap. i think i also saw a ried racing conversion knuckle as well.

ok, i purchased the rig and here's a pic of the part in question. there are some wires going to it that appear to have ripped off the device. any ideas?
Thats for your 4x4 light. Doesn't harm anything and that is a posi lok system. I have the same on my YJ. Works well, just hard to tell when its locked sometimes.

i've been having a tough time figuring that out as well. lately i can't seem to get it to engage. after talking to the PO, i may have a Frankenstein posi-lok. it seems he got a deal on a the kit for a dodge and just made it work on the YJ. I guess i need to break into this thing next week and see what i need to fix.

it sure makes me nervous when i'm driving in the snow, thinking i'm in 4wd, and my back end starts to pass me.

its the furthest gauge to the left on the center set of gauges one of the circular ones

That depends on the Year. My 88 the (non working) 4x4 light is in that little area above the steering wheel with the turn signals and brights indicator.

The gauges in the center of the dash from left to right are: Temp, Gas, Clock, Oil pressure, Volt

Edit: never mind I see now you were replying to someone with a 95 YJ, I though you were answering the OP

You can make the 4wd light work when you engage the transfer case. It wont tell you when the front axle is engaged but with the PosiLoc its pretty cut and dried. You have to get the electrical transfer case switch from a Cherokee with the NP231J. There is a sticky on this at the top or its in one of them. I will be doing the c clip swap and the Cherokee switch and snatching out all the vacuum crap. I will in the future get a PosiLoc or the one from Allied or even the homebrew one detailed in another sticky.
