Dana 30 spindle and hub seal install orientation...

Wrapping up my dana 30 rebuild and cannot find the proper way to install these 2 seals.. The little black rubber one that butts up against the spindle bearing and the large seal that goes on the backside of the hub...

Spindle bearing seal: flat side or c channel facing up and away from the bearing?

Hub seal: wide flat rubber side in or the 'double ribbed rubber side' in?

Thanks!

Unless I'm mistaken the circular spring that goes around the rubber lip on seals always goes on the inside(toward the lube, in this case grease)

Spindle seal goes like this.

And I would agree with agear on the spring being on the lube side.

Okay, I found an axle stub with the seals on it... looks like the spindle bearing seal gets installed with the channel facing UP...

On to the wheel bearing seal... The old one had a flat metal edge to it whereas the new one does not.. On the new one, does the sharp/single edge of the metal go in or does the rounded/blunt edge go in?

PICS...

On the Timken 4131 wheel bearing seals I have, the metal edge/face does not exist as in your last photo... It is a 'rolled' edge or a 'sharp' edge. I am inclined to think that the sharp edge goes in as one needs a driving face to drive it into the hub..

Hmm maybe its a different style seal ? The part number is different from the one in the last picture in post #8 and both seals are timken so you have a different seal

I have my axles out on my dana 30 for a Gear swap and my spindle bearing seal is still on the axle and its positioned with the flat part toward the Spindler bearing. Assuming it was on there correctly to begin with. As for the hub seal its still installed with the spring toward the inside of the hub in the pictures. And 2 mechanic s i know told me the spring always goes on the inside. I think thats a common fact among mechanics.

I see your seal#4131. It's a different style. Can't say if it will work or not. The autozone website says it will. Personally I'd stick with the style in the picture because I know it works and I don't think grease leaks that much. But then again maybe your seal is better -I don't know...

You have impeccable timing Drespecki. I was going to reassemble my spindles and hubs either tonight or tomorrow. My spindle rebuild kit is an SKF #BK1 from NAPA. I'll take a look at it tonight and at my spindle which I think one of them still has the seal in it, and it's from the factory. I'll let you know what I find.

For the hub/wheel bearing seal, looked up the Timken 8430S and it is not available at Rock Auto or Autozone... I have a 1983 CJ7 4.2 liter BUT the hubs are the 6 bolt larger ones from a 1979. Hub seal 4131 is available for the 79 and the 83 but the 8430S is not..?? Hmmmm

What seal ,which youre replacing, was/is on your hub ? Get the part number off it.Threw it away ? Member what it looks like ?

Haha, I am putting the six bolt hubs on! The 4131 are for both 1979 six bolts and 1983 five bolt hubs.... The old seals from the six bolt hubs i am putting on are long gone, I should have taken a few pics of them..

I do have power brakes and the stock dana 30 up front on my 1983.. The only thing different are the larger 1979 hubs that I am taking into account for all the parts, etc..

I didn't put mine on tonight. I couldn't get any of my puller's to work on the spindle brg. so I'll have to try to find a puller tomorrow. I was hoping I could use a drift punch from the back side but no go.
The old seal in my hub was a CR 23035 and it had the typical flat metal side. The new 4131 looks like yours with no spring and no flat side.

Yeah, no spring and a rounded sorta looking edge. I put em on last night... damn hub and rotor with the grease etc.. was like a suction fit onto the spindle. Sort of had to find the right spot and it finally slid on okay...
