Ok, the time has come to fix my rust issue. Both frame sections at the rear control arm bracket where the frame starts to rise to clear the axle have to be repaired. The brackets have now finally broken loose. I am NOT a metalworker, so I come to y'all for assistance. What is going to be my best approach for the problem? About ten inches of frame will have to be repaired on both sides and the mounts are destroyed.

I own a welder, but not sure which part is the business end.

My dad and brother-in-law are good welders and would be happy to weld whatever I need. I just need a good plan to start with.

You need to quit giving fabrication advice until you understand it a bit more.

There is no place on the frame 1/2" is applicable except for weldnuts and the same holds true for 3/8". The frame from the factory is quite a bit under 2/10's of an inch thick.

Trying to deal with all the offset and misalignment issues scabbing 1/2" on would be a nightmare not to mention you've now created a ridgid spot in a member that is designed to flex. That alone is enough not to use it.

So how did you fix it? I have a buddy who is having the same basic problem...

When I had this problem on my '98 I acquired some good frame sections that I spliced into place. I made a brace from rectangular tube that would span the area affected by rot, welded it to the frame and cut out the bad sections. I then fit the new sections in place after beveling the seams and welded them in. After grinding the seams flat I added plates where I could and stitch welded those.
It's been 3 years and about 30K miles since with plenty of off road excursions.

The same rot is on my 98. I picked up some frame kits from autorust.com. The kits just go over the rusted part like a cap. Then you weld it. After you cut out the rust, clean it, cap it, weld it. Nice kit. Hopefully I can get started on mine as soon as it warms up some. I already have the gas tank out just need to get the hard gas line off the frame.. any tips are welcome
