Has anyone tried painting the old plastic center console. I found a tan one, but I have a black interior. Just interested in seeing if anyone has tried it and how it turned out. Thank you in advance.

I used the same on a tan dash pad. Painted it black and it turned out awesome. Used it to freshen up my black OEM carpet, rollbar padding, Bestop half doors and Bestop Sunrider soft top as well.
You won't be disappointed.
Before painting, I would try trading with a member who has tan interior for a black console. Black consoles are relatively common compared to the tan one. You might even get some extra cash out of the trade. Just a thought before painting a perfectly good (and rare) OEM console.
It looks like factory color and it does not come off. But I would also consider selling your rare tan colored console for a more readily available black colored version. You could probably buy two with the sale of the single tan colored one IMHO.
I painted mine. It was black, but the finish was worn and stained. I prayed it gloss black krylon. Its just plastic, plastic will take paint well. You my want to lightly sand it first. Its been a year now and no peeling or anything. I figure if it starts looking bad I'll spray it again.
Ha, I'm with Hound Keith and Boh. Tan consoles aren't easy to find. Black ones are a dime a dozen. What color "tan" is it? It's probably either Nutmeg (uber-rare) or Honey (also uber-rare).
Sorry to get everyone worked up over the color. After inspection of this I found it is out of a YJ and not a CJ. So its not OEM and its more gray than tan. A fellow wheeler picked it up for me, so I did not even physically see it yet. I just want this mess of a winter over, so I can post a meet up for a weekend of wheeling in the Pine Barrens, NJ.
I used krylon spray paint on mine turned out great. Just use Alot of light coats..with Some light sanding between coats. Also after its dry for a few days spray a couple coats of clear on it.
SEM makes an awesome product. I've used the rest and there is no comparison. Pro body shops use this stuff on a daily basis, the car owner never knows the part was painted.
I just reno'd mine by using a lighter primer. Whatever paint you use, make sure it works on all plastics. The plastic is not your typical Polyurethane plastic that most newer cars have everywhere. Remove all of the rivets and the hinges. Prime and paint with a multiple coats. Let dry for 24 hours even with the fast drying paint. Replace all rivets and hinges. Looks better than new.
On a side note, you can replace the locking mechanism with the push/release button that are in almost any AMC car like the Javelin (Picture attached). You can find them at most AMC restoration parts sites for about $30 or so. They are the same size and depth. Makes it really easy to open and close. I'll post picts later.
