Let's say a 99 or 00 XJ with the 4.0/AW4, and trying to put that transmission into my 03 4.0/42RE WJ. My guess is that physically it would bolt up just fine since they are both behind 4.0's, but the electronics would probably be a total nightmare? How feasible or not would this swap actually be?

Well, considering you build your own engines, I'll go ahead and accept your advice on what is or is not worth the effort

It will have a cel on at all times due to the integrated tcm in the ecu.
With the 5spd wj swap you can get an ecu from a ram to correct this, the 4.0 has no such donor you can use. The xj computer won't swap over, doesn't in the zj either.

Shouldn't be too difficult. Take the TCM and wiring from the XJ to run the AW4. You'll have a CEL as mentioned though.

Biggest problem I see is making the shifter and linkage work, since the linkage hook up is different as well as the shift pattern.

Like has been said it is possible but th e wiring makes it a very daunting task. It sucks because my roommate has a ZJ with a 42re that is about to check out and I have an AW4 sitting in the garage! I have been researching but its not looking too promising so we are hitting the PAP.

Being that Ratmonkey mentioned using a RAM computer to run a 5 speed manual, maybe you could do the same, with a separate TCM to control the AW4.

FlexdXJ - What year is your roomate's ZJ?
Only works for the v8 zj or a wj without skis or that has had the skis removed. There is no equivalent pcm ti swap over for the 4.0 grand.

This sounds not even remotely worth it, compared to rebuilding the 42RE with a shift kit, oil pump, and torque converter. Anyone know anything about rebuilding a 42RE with 44RE internals? I've heard this can be done to significantly increase reliability.
