As it says what grade bolts should I use for my body mounts? I've heard very different opinions on whether to use grade 8 or grade 5. The factory bolts (which are in bad shape) seem like they are grade 8, but I have heard not to use grade 8 because even though they have a better stretch resistance than grade 5 they tend to shear easier. I know when you buy a body lift they come with grade 5. So does anybody really know?

Grade 5 would be fine, the body lift that was on mine came with Grade 5. When I pulled it off I went with Grade 8, really the price difference isn't much. I got all my bolts in Grade 8 for under $20, and that was at a local True Value up here in the hills, not even a Home Depot or anything.

Here's a pretty good read on the subject:

ROCKCRAWLER.com - Grade 5 vs. Grade 8 Fasteners

I figure go with Grade 8's just because you get the extra strength. Since bolts are designed to stretch, having the proper torque is all that matters. Both grades are ductile and any differences in that are negligible.

Realistically the Grade 5's are fine but it's all about that warm fuzzy feeling.

Thank you all for the input. Louie4, thank you for that very informative article. That article definitely puts to rest the theory that grade 8 will shear easier than grade 5. Obviously after reading that I realize that grade 5 is more than enough for what is needed and grade 8 is an even bigger overkill, but I tend to overkill anyway, especially when me and my families well being is in question.

Thats a great post Lou. I've bookmarked it for further refrence.

Thanks:thumbsup:. I've seen several threads on the matter and I just dug around online and found that. I think it clearly lays out the differences between the two. I'll usually go with grade 8's but it all depends.
