My P/S pump and resevoir are cracked and dump fluid, and I'm in the market for a new one. Before I go to the JY and pull one off the first 93-96 I see, are there any bolt in JY upgrades? Funds are severly limited, as in I'm replacing this on borrowed $$.

Thanks, just wasn't sure if there was an upgrade I should do while I had it out.

Good call, I didn't even think about that. I'm pretty sure the I6 has the tranny cooler on that side of the radiator. I'm sure that would work fine for a P/S cooler.

I dont think there is a spare cooler built in, but all you need is a small cooler from Advance($10) and some hose and hose clamps. just run a line from the PS return line to the cooler inlet, then from the cooler outlet back to where the PS return line would connect to the pump

Actually I was right, I checked my brothers then looked it up. The I-6 ZJ has the aux tranny cooler on the RH side (if you're looking straight at the jeep) and V8s have it on the LH side. I think I have some spare hose laying around

It would look something like this after I was done.

Edit: It looks like identical coolers. I guess any ZJ aux trans cooler will work :dunno:

I dont know why there would be a spare cooler going unused on the jeep, but if its there, its there. Its hould work just fine if thats the case. I know the V8s have an aux trans cooler, but mine is actually hooked up to the trans. I just got a decent size cooler and made my own

I don't think you get what I'm saying. I'm saying using a ZJ trans cooler from the JY to make a P/S cooler. I have another aux trans cooler on my ZJ 2 hours away. I'll hold off till then to do the P/S cooler since it'll be free.

ohhhhh. it makes sense now. sorry for me being a little slow... sounds like a good idea to me. I thought about that route but I didnt feel like getting all the fittings and what not( since the factory coolers have hard lines run to them with fittings on the end) i just wanted to run soft line from the box to the cooler to the pump

I just recently pulled my aux tranny cooler, and I'm positive it had soft lines going into it on both ends, but had hard lines leading up to it. Basically all I have to do is cut tube and clamp it down to make this work.

I hope its that easy. maybe my aux trans cooler was different? it had a hard line run to it from the radiator, and a short hard line to where it connects to the trans cooler line via quick connect. either way it wasnt cutting it anymore so i took it out and installed an 11x8 inch cooler in its place

Nice, well I'll figure it out, and I'll do a write up for it cause I'm a cheap SOB

Hey, go ahead and do it. I did one write up today for how to get the shifter to stay in drive, and I'm doing another next week for how to cure the rattling rear hatch without filling the hatch with great stuff foam:rofl:

Good call, I actually came across one like that, but didn't pull it. I pulled a JY pump in good shape, but the plastic fitting on the resevoir was broken off, and so were all the other ones on every other resevoir including mine so I drilled it out, and stuck a brass fitting in there sealed up with silicone. Thanks for the help freakinheep, you seem to pop up in my 'HELP ME' threads alot. I got my ZJ running BTW, the cam sesnor I put in was bad so put a new one in and it runs tip top now!

HAHAHA nothin new yet. I've learned alot with this 93 of mine, I've never had to trouble shoot so much. It taught me alot about how the different sensors work, and how one little thing can shut the whole jeep off. Everything runs great, just need to put the new P/S pump in, get a driver side TRE, and some jam nuts for my IRO HD Tie rod and I'll be road ready. Then I have to wait for my first paycheck at my new job, and my USCG drill pay to come in and it will be registered, and legal  Soon after I'll start the build.

I'm building hydroassist on my ZJ and someone told me that I need to upgrade the pump.
Second reply to this thread states ZJ stock pumps are good enough for hydroassist mods.
anyone can confirm that?

I was thinking about pumps from WJs, are they better

i think you quoted the wrong guy lol. i didnt ask about coolers.

oh and to the others, yes you can use a tranny cooler for a PS cooler. you never add anything to the pressure side of the pump, always run it through the return line.

#33 ·
Late reply, I know, but the ZJ tow package specs an uprated ps pump with higher temp seals. I dont know if the flow or pressure specs are different. Anyway, may help somebody pick a preferred donor at the junkyard.

Anyone know?

Some of the 93-96/98 Jeep ZJ Grand cherokees had a Power steering switch for variable / low speed power steeing. The switch is either in the pump itself or in the pressure hose going into the power steering pump. There will be a electrical connector / wiring connected to switch. If there is NO switch inline it should be a standard pump. That is the one you want.
