yj front axle seal replacement

So dropped the jeep off at the shop today, (dealer), they quoted me 300-400 for the replacement for both seals and a 4 hour time frame, but then today they called and said they are waiting on a seal puller tool that they need to get the seals out because they are pressed into the axle tube. so now i've had to cancel my weekend 4x4 plans :/

does this sound right? I am thinking they may be trying to get the seals out without pulling the axle which from my understanding cannot be done on a dana 30. Every write up i've read said to get the seals out you just stuck something up the tube and hammered them out

there's no way around getting the seals out without removing the shafts.

They probably did not have the special tool on hand to get the PIA CAD seal out.

It can be done without it but dealerships tend to use the right tools.

Sorry to hear that it's taking longer than you thought. If you were in Fayetteville we could have done it in the driveway for about $40 ($12 seals + 70w90)

If they are replacing both seals (driver and passenger) they have to pull both axle shafts and the carrier. For that kind of money you would be far better off to do it yourself and put in TJ or XJ shafts. That eliminates the need for a seal at the CAD, is a faster job and an upgrade. I would pick up the jeep, go wheeling and check the fluid once in a while. Next weekend go to a junkyard and get some shafts to swap in.

I would but its sitting in their shop apart now, waiting on the tool to arrive so i'd still have to pay them. I have been looking into doing an axle swap, and probably would have if i had not just moved to my new house. and had the shop finished. I dont like working on cars in the driveway.

yep turns out they were looking for the tool to press in the seals, so after finding it today they are going to have it ready tomorrow. they said the bill would be for 4 hours originally, i'll be interested to see if they stiff me for 6 since they started work today at 3:30 and will said it would be ready at lunch tomorrow. this combined with the 2 hours they worked on it on Friday.

I think i'll have a valid argument if they try and say i owe them for more than the 4 hours they quoted me and the parts/supplies.

so got an interesting call from them today. They have the drivers side done, but they called to tell me that the passengerside axle seal would not fit. they are saying the drivers and passenger side seals are a different size.

does this sound right? I though both were the same size on YJ's.

+1 - those are completely different seals. I recently bought both of them.

Here's what I bought for the seal at the CAD:
Crown Automotive 83500199 Intermediate Axle Seal 84-95 CHEROKEE (XJ) WRANGLER

At the differential (Driver's Side) from Rock Auto:
Timken 710068

I ordered two of each in case I screw up the installation on one of them. BTW, I haven't installed them yet, but I am hopeful that I have the right seals

For anyone else who finds this thread in the future, here's the install tool:

There are other ways to install the seals, but the tool is nice. Search around the forum, and you'll see other good techniques that don't require the tool.

apearently not, they just called and said they had to order the part from another dealer, and that it may be there in the morning, or in the afternoon tomorrow.

regardless... they have now had my jeep for 56 hours to complete a 4 hour job... will never take anything to this dealer again...

fingers crossed...hopefully they get the part tomorrow and finish it. They've already tried to tell me on the phone that they under quoted me and it would be 6 hours labor... and I had to tell them the book called for 4 hours and since the parts came from another dealer, I expect to see an invoice from the other dealer for the parts and not them as i will not be paying a markup on top of the other dealers mark up....

well I got the jeep back yesterday... drove to work and home 2 times, maybe a total of 60 miles, then went to get some food tonight came out and had a nice 3 foot long puddle of gear oil coming out of the same axle that was leaking before.

Guess i'll be back at the shop waiting on them to open today... 393 dollars in the hole and I have a worse axle leak now than I did before I took it to them.

I did put it in 4x4 one time just to make sure it would go back in right, and went down one tobacco road but no 4x4 required there so im pretty sure the screwed the seal up when they put it back togather. Fingers crossed that the shop does not try to screw me over blaming it on me, or saying that I have a bad axle that's tearing the seals up.

Sorry to hear this - I can only imagine how frustrated you are right now. Your experience (and many, many other similar stories) are exactly why I will do all my own work on my Jeep.

Actually, I will take it in for an alignment, but that's not often. And I take it to a small local shop, where I am able to watch everything.

they either boogered the seal putting it in (very common) or, they dragged the axle shaft over the installed seal putting it in and wrecked it (very common)

No excuse. The only reason to pay the inflated rates for dealer service is they are supposed to have the special tools, knowledge and training.

Don't let them BS you.

Get nasty with them, they are obviously incompetent, alot of dealer techs don't know chit about anything thats 10 years or older.

first thing they said was well we wonder if the axle tube, or axle is bad since it was on the same side.

I said, well if that's the case.... then why is it leaking a puddle of oil every hour vs before when it took a couple of days before it was dripping onto the ground.

Beat it like a rented mule immediately. Seal don't care.

I have changed numerous broken front axle shafts on the trail and almost every time the seal starts leaking shortly afterward. Why? It's dirty. I'm in a hurry. Maybe there isn't any grease for the splines.

Chances are these dealer guys have not worked on a YJ ever and are probably not experienced generally.

well i went back and got the jeep, they cant get another seal or the tool again until Monday, so im going to install my side rails, and new winch this weekend. and drop it back off on Monday... so much for my off road plans this weekend though.

I would be surprised if it has any oil in it at all now.

I would find a couple of local helpers and do it yourself. Document the process with pix and/or video. Then go back and get a full refund.
Definitely do it yourself, not hard and since you can't wheel it anyway, go for it. Use some 1/2 threaded rod, big washers and pull it in yourself. I did mine by myself, no more leaks, and it cost less than $15 for the tool! Look on here there is a write up

Like they said make a video of the entire process showing puddle and all, threaten them if they don't refund your money that you are going to one of those ambulance chasing lawyers on tv, use their 6hr quote for time and make them pay you. Tell them you are going to post how crappy their service is everywhere, Facebook, topix, etc. if they still don't want to play, post the issue on topix and see how many others get bad service from them. It's a pain, but they'll come around

well turns out the axle is bad... annoying as that is.. it has a nice grove in it where the seal rest... so i ordered a new axle, well used one on ebay...

shop thought i was going to pay for full labor to replace again since in their opinion this is 2 different jobs now, but i told them in my opinion it is not since i feel the tech should have seen the grove in the axle and let me know before. but that said i guess it'll be fixed soon.

if it starts leaking after this then i'll be doing the TJ swap.

BTW wasent there a vender on here that sold TJ front axle swap kits that came with the plate?
