I found a rear end out of a liberty for cheap.. will the complete rear end swap into my xj?... anyone know.. if at minimum I will be getting the discs for the conversion...

i would guess its completely different, the liberty uses coils in the back i think. and i doubt its the same width. go to a junkyard and try and find a dana 44 out of a late 80s cherokee, or a 8.25 . liberty axle isnt worth it.

better yet if your looking to do an axle swap find an 8.8 out of a ford they almost bolt straight up and are almost invinsible

Thanks for the info guys.. I'm gonna get the disc' for the upgrade...

if by bolt up you mean weld on new leaf perches and shock mounts...
haha yeah not really almost bolt up but hey its close enough.

I just found out that the 8.25 29 spline is almost as strong as the 8.8 so you could look into that and it is BOLT up

The Liberty came with the 8.25.

what?

Having to weld on new perches/mounts is the complete opposite of bolt up, idk where you thought that was close enough.

And a 29 spl. 8.25 is hardly almost as strong as an 8.8

kzjim, what size tires are you planning to run? If not more than 33", I would just do the brake conversion. The 8.25 you already have has a good chance of being a 29 splined axle. That will do you good even with 35's if you aren't too hard on it.

The 8.25 gets no credit its a very sturdy axle

and as by close enough i mean its the easiest axle swap unless you are getting one from another xj welding new perchs and mounts isnt that hard. Me and one of my friends done this to his and it was cake.

the numbers are very close to the D44 the biggest differance being .10 in the axle shafts
Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube
Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube

I couldnt find the specs on the 8.8 but from memory im pretty sure its 31 spline 1.31 diameter shafts the 8.25 is almost as big as the 8.8
Now if you cant weld of course it may be a little more difficult but it was gonna cost him like 70 bucks for a local shop to weld it up for him not bad

Please help

Rear differential done for and can't afford a new one. All junkyards around me don't have an exact match. I have a1988 xj 4 door 4x4 with 4.0 automatic and Spicer Dana 35 with a gear ratio of 3.55. Can I take the gears from any Dana 35 that has the same 3.55 ratio and put them in mine to rebuild my differential??? I'm only talking about the gears and carrier not the housing or the axle. This I believe is my only chance to get my only vehicle back on the road.

While the junkyards may not list other XJ rear D35s as being interchangeable, they basically are. The early ones (that you have) do not use c-clips to retain the axles, hence they will only show 84-90 as interchanging. You're better off getting a later complete axle than trying to swap a set of gears between axles.

It take some special tools and skills to correctly setup and pre-load a diff. You can't really grab the gears and center out of another axle and "bolt it up" and expect it to last long.
