Hey guys,

Well im on the road driving for a family vacation, so no jeep dealership anywhere for ages...power steering pipe had the usual jeep problem of leaking through the thread on the pipe, my fault for no fixing it before we left and had eventually run low on PS fluid. I know dealer recommends using mopar fluid but I had no choice but to use some ATF power steering fluid..

My concern is that im going to break my power steering pump.

I don't have a clutch fan set up..I got the system where it works through the PS pump..

Thanks

Straight off www.wjjeeps.com

Mopar®P/N 04883077 Hydraulic fluid / Power steering fluid (MS5931)
MS5931 IS THE ONLY FLUID THAT CAN BE USED FOR THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Important note:
The factory fill power steering fluid for all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees is a unique fluid, MS5931. ATF+4 (MS9602) should not be mixed or used as a "topping off" fluid on the Grand Cherokee WJ. All WJ models should be serviced using ONLY the special MS5931 fluid. ATF+4 is NOT an approved Power Steering Fluid and should never be used under any circumstances. Note that all fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition.

Well I did not know about this forum or wjjeeps when I did my ps fluid, I was simply saying I made the mistake and had no side effects for the last 4 years.

The one thing I will note is I had a horrible sound at full lock (loud clicking) before I changed out the fluid for the so called wrong fluid and after I added regular ps fluid I haven't heard the sound since.

But since I said this, its gonna blow up tomorrow (knock on wood)

Thanks guys.

As soon as I return in about 1 week I'll do a complete flush and replace with mopar fluid just to be on the safe side.

FYI over here in AUSTRALIA all cars/4x4's use ATF oil (automatic trassmission oil) for the transmission as well as power steering. That's why I thought I could get away with it, but after all it is a Chrysler

I bet Honda's don't use ATF.

Your Jeep requires special fluid because your cooling fan runs off the power steering pump. If you can get the right fluid, I'd change it out ASAP. Otherwise, you might burn out that very expensive fan.

ive used STP for the past 80k miles on my jeep, ive only flushed the power steering once in that time and refilled it with STP. pump feels fine to me, a little weak... but that comes with age and abuse.

I've used the Valvoline fluid that said it met spec MS5931 but now I can't find it anywhere! Did they stop making it or something?

I just bought some a couple weeks ago at AdvanceAuto. I just checked their site and it seems they still carry it.
