Just had to have a Faulty Penzoil Filter replaced with a Autozone one.
The Penzoil one the Back presure Valve was wonkey or something.
So now the prob was solved with a Autozone Oil filter.

I want to Baby my Engine should i go Mopar filter and Mobil one Syn Oil ?

Just like to know what other JK owners use.

My first oil change I used a fram from autozone and it caused the dry rattle on first of the day starts. I went back to Mopar but this weekend I was in a pinch. Went back to Autozone and asked for one with an anti-reversing valve. The fram "ToughGuard" has that. So far, two days, no dry starts.

How about that new Purple stuff on the market? I buy it bcuz it's the most expensive, and thus has to be the best? Right??!!

Leave me alone, ignorance is bliss!

Royal Purple is junk. You are paying for purple food coloring and there fancy marketing. Its just a bunch of back wood hicks in Texas who makes it. For the money and protection you can't beat Valvoline. I use the synpower and my engine as a mole's ***. What ever you decide though stay away from Pennzoil and Quick Mistake I wouldn't use that oil on a flee market lawn mower. Mobil and Exxon products I have noticed while you don't see sludge varnish is a common problem around valve covers and oil pans. The best two oils are Castrol and Valvoline period. Anything else is subpar.

I had a bad experience with Fram oil filters, bad threads so it didn't seal properly. I've also read about of the guts of Fram filters being sucked into someones engine on the Mustang forum. I use the NAPA gold filter-IDK-it's probably made by Fram. I also use the NAPA synthetic oils in the boat, the mustang gt, the Tundra and the JK. No problems thus far.

FYI--- Napa Gold/Select series are all made by WIX, the best out there, tho WIX-branded ones are expensive I use the Napa version, still is like 6 or 7 bucks here

I have not use syn oil tho, still running dino Castrol stuff

Does anyone use the Lucas; heavy duty oil stabilizer??

I've heard it's a great supplement to the oil.

I've used Lucas products to quieten down a worn out Harley transmission long enough to get to rebuild time (winter). It worked well and I now use just a bit in the rebuilt tranny hopefully as a preventative. But that's a 27 year old machine. On a new Jeep I don't think I'll be using additives. If for no other reason, it's got a lifetime drivetrain warranty. Don't want to give them a reason to not honor it.

I use Mobil 1 5w20 Synthetic and a Wix filter and I believe it can't be beaten. Drives and runs smooth as a baby's butt. Costs me about $34.00 every change and I have been changing it at 3,000 just bc I like to do it, but will be extending it to at least 5,000 so I'm not throwing money away...

Been using a fram filter and the cheap good oil mobil 1 black dyno oil. Havent noticed any difference for 20k miles now. I change every 3-5k miles depending on how much I have been offroading.

I go with the 'monthly full synthetic and filter' special at the local auto parts store. While I'm a huge fan of Amzoil, Mobil-1, etc.. A full syn change and a decent filter at regular intervals per the owner's manual will probably keep you out of trouble. Currently I'm running Syntec and a Bosch Distance plus filter...the weekly special was $26.99 for 5 quarts + the filter. My wife's car takes 4 quarts, so I just bought two specials :) ... 3-4 months ago it was the Mobil 1 special + filter for around the same price.

Even the local Jeep dealer has switched their contract from Mobil-1 to Penzoil Synthetic for their full syn changes...

Don't plan on running Syn in the Jeep. Got the oil changed at the dealer Saturday. $12.95 with a coupon.

I've always changed my own oil but I can't do it that cheap. People stress too much over filters. I've used Wix and Fram for years is all sorts of cars and trucks. Never an issue.

I use Wix filter and dino oil. I don't really want to switch to synthetic, cost too much imo. I'm happy changing my oil daily. I'm way over due though.. probably going to do it in April.

I wouldn't suggest adding any additives to your oil. If you are not happy with an oil, change oils, don't go adding things.

As far as filters go, Wix is a great aftermarket company that builds filters for many autoparts stores.

If you are on facebook, the above link takes you to a photo album with a bunch filters cut open so you can see what the inside looks like. There are some that are alot better than others.

Just bought my first Jeep. 2008 JK Sahara and its due for an oil change in the next month. I ran Castrol Syntec in my pickup but have recently read its overpriced hype so I'm switching to a different synthetic. Got it narrowed down to Mobil 1 and Quaker State Ultimate Durability...has anybody used both of these and can give a comparison? Dont want to break the bank either.

Cheers.:cheers2:

5w-20?

Both are excellent oils and should easily go 5000 miles. Depending on how easy your actual use is on the oil (lots of highway, few short trips) you could possibly go 7500 or even 10,000 miles.

Pick which ever one is on sale. Get a good filter (fram ultra (XG3614) are getting rave reviews theses days).
Reset your oil minder and see when it tell you to change then go another 1,000 miles.

Just be sure to check you dipstick every week or every fuel fill up until you know how the engine is on oil.
Some 3.8s consume oil.

The oil minder tracks the engine duty cycle and give a good conservative oil change interval based on how you actually use the engine. It could trigger at 3,000 miles, or it could go 10,000 or even more depending on how you drive. It's set up expecting conventional oil so a quality name brand synthetic can go even longer intervals. Although if you are in an extremely dusty environment you have to use your judgement.

I don't know how much you know about the previous maintenance on your '08 but I'd consider changing out the coolant if it's original (OEM is 5-year HOAT coolant) and also get fresh brake fluid. Those are often overlooked.

Awesome, thanks for the advice! The guy I bought it from has service records showing a total fluid change 18 months ago so the transfer case and coolant are on my list to do. I havent picked it up yet, how do I access the oil minder so i can tell if its triggered and telling me to change it out? Thanks.

The 3.8s don't have the percent countdown monitors so it's a "blind" system. You have to reset it yourself whenever you do an oil change. It's easy, turn the key to ON (don't start engine), within 10seconds press the gas pedal to floor three times, then turn key to OFF.

When the oil change indicator (OCI) decides it's near time to change you will hear a chime and see the "CHANGE OIL" message on the odometer at each start up until you reset the OCI.

The manual says to change the oil with 500 miles of seeing the change oil message, but with a quality synthetic you can extend it further without issue.

Enjoy the JK

I noticed you're up in Canada. I know that some brands of oil that are cheap in the USA are quite expensive up there (like Mobil 1) but any of the better name brand oils that meet certification (SM or SN) will be fine in the 3.8. Even a quality conventional like Pennzoil Yellow Bottle. It's not a picky engine.

This looks like a good place to post this list. It can also be found in the JK F.A.Q.
If you have a number that isn't on here please post it and I will update the main list.
