ATF4+ ??? or ...???

The only difference between a bottle that says power steering fluid and transmission fluid - for this application - is a red dye. It's the same stuff.

Let the flame begin.

All this talk about fluids lately makes me want to flush all of the fluids in my Jeep and replace them with mil spec 15W40 just to prove I can...

There are a ton of chemical additives other than just dye that are present in ATF +4 and not power steering fluid.

Have I used ATF in my personal PS systems to no ill effect for years? Yep.

But saying they are exactly the same is false.

Yup.

I've had a lengthy chat with Howe about power steering fluids a few weeks back. ATF works (which is proven by the large number of TJs and who knows how many other vehicles on the road without issue) but it isn't the best stuff out there and performs much different than other fluids labeled as PS fluid.

My opinion: run whatever your manual states (regular PS fluid for 97-02 and ATF+4 for 03-06) if your power steering system is stock. When or if you upgrade, worry about what fluid is best.

Gents, need some help: there's no ATF+4 here in Mongolia, but I have found Mobil's Multipurpose ATF high performance. It says it's compatible with systems using Dexron 3 H or Allison C4. Is this appropriate for use in power steering for an 02 TJ? Thanks for any advice.

If you read the thread from the beginnings, a '02 does not use ATF, but actual power steering fluid.

Once I was being Proactive and decided to change my PS fluid. I called the Stealer and had them send out 2 qts. They sent ATF+4. I went ahead and used that.

My pump got a terrible case of the squeels! It sounded like a Ford PS pump! I made sure that it was full and it was. Went and drained it all out (all I could) and put some Prestone PS fluid in and no more squeel.

I did several drain and fills with the Prestone stuff and all is well. So only PS fluid for my 02.
