I am planning on swapping out my stock Peugot Tranny out of my 88 YJ. I was told that the NV3550 Transmission was very good to swap for. I wasn't sure which vehicles come with it. I am planning on getting it from a junk yard to save some bucks $$ Anyone know which vehicles to look for to find this transmission? Thanks

It is a good question, I found this, copy/paste:

The New Venture Gear 3550 was released in the Jeep TJ Wrangler and XJ Cherokee in 2000, as the replacement to the ax15. It is also found in Dodge downsized pickups. It's last year in the Jeep was 2004, after which it was replaced by the NSG370 six-speed. The 3550 is a takeoff from the New Process 3500 as found in smaller GM truck applications, though all external case features are different.

So, I knew it was in the 2000-2004 wranglers, but it looks like some cherokee xj's got them, and downsized dodge pick-ups. And it looks like all in this time frame; 2000-2004, from what I can tell right now.

Alright, well I just found this; The transmission is available in two and four-wheel drive configurations. So, I have to imagine that many of the other than wrangler applications were two-wheel drive applications.

Also a good manual here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/23066710/MANUAL-TRANSMISSION-NV3550

I'm reasonably sure about 1999-up TJ w/242ci I6 and 2000-2001XJ w/242ci I6. I think some of the later V6 Dakotas got them (starting around 1999-2000 or so,) but the bellhousing will be for the LA-block and won't fit AMC. However, the NV3550 has the same bellhousing mounting pattern as the 1993-up AX-15e (external slave,) so that opens up swap options. I haven't figured out where else you can find it yet.

Note that the AX-15i and AX-15e are both viable swaps. The AX-15i will allow you to use the exact same clutch kit (including slave cylinder/TO bearing and pilot bushing/bearing) as the BA-10; while the AX-15e will be able to use only the same friction (disc/pressure plate,) the pilot diameter is different and (naturally) the slave cylinder and TO bearing is different. The AX-15i (internal slave) was used in XJ, MJ, and YJ from mid-1988 through 1993, and in the V6-238 Dakota through MY1993 as well (I believe.) The AX-15i became the AX-15e (external slave) for MY1994 - the spline remained the same (1.125"-10,) but the pilot increased in diameter (from roughly .625" to about .750") and requires the use of an "off-list" bushing - generally the bushing from the early 1970's CJ V8-304 and three-speed manual is used.

The AX-15 was also used in the ZJ w/242ci I6 until about midway through MY1994! I don't know if it was the AX-15i or AX-15e, however.

Changing from the BA-10 to the AX-15e also requires changing the clutch master cylinder and hydraulic line - but that should probably be done by now anyhow.

The AX-15i, AX-15e, and NV3550 are all workable swaps for the BA-10/5, but the AX-15s will be easier for you to find (the AX-15 was originally a Toyota box - so you can probably find it in Toyota pickups, and just find an AMC bellhousing to put on the thing!)
