Can anyone tell me what is the specification of the battery on my 2.8L CRD? It seems the local dealer can't answer this question, and the battery retailers do not list the car.
I think the battery is rated at about 50A/800CCA/size34. A brand recommendation would be welcome too, but we dont have the same brand line up her in UK.
By the way, is 4 years and 47,000 miles about right for poor cold cranking at +7 degrees celcius?

There should be a sticker on your battery that shows this information. 4 years is OK for a battery lifespan so thats not terrible for a diesel it may better then a gasser as you have to heat up the glow plugs. Check the sticker if you can, and if thats no help then someone else with a CRD will have to answer you.

Group 34R Optima red top. It has reversed pos & neg locations so cables reach correctly. With a little adjusting - many other group 34 batterys can fit your CRD. Odyssey AGM batteries comes to mind too, more CCA's. They also manufacture for Sears automotive (thier Platinum series IIRC) here state side. Have seen a few Optima yellow tops installed in CRD's also.

I have the Optima Red Top in my Liberty CRD and it fits fine. I use Optimas in te Wrangler and most of my other cars and they are great batteries.

I have used both Yellow and red tops. If it is just a starting battery, go for the red top as it has a longer warranty. If you have a winch or use lots of DC accessories with the battery off, then the Yellow Top is the way to go.

crd battery

Mine interstate was only putting out 500 amps(suppose to do 800), so I took it to Sam club because it said Samsclub on it in the hope of some pro-ration.
There was no date on it, but Sams told me they would give me 50% off on a replacement. They had a group 34 agm for $137, rated at 760 cca, it is an energizer but uses Optima technology. so for 50% off I grabbed it. When I got home after it sat for about an hour, I put my super duper Battery tester on it (better than most Battery shops have) and it read 950 cca.
So for $40 less than the Optima, this might be a good option.

See how it performs after 6 or 12 months. Load test the dickens out of it after that amount of time. Are you in a cold state?

Optima's are not what they used to be. Hope it holds up decently for you. :)

nope, not in a cold State, I summer near San Francisco and winter in Az.
My CRD was starting fine with the old 500 amp battery, but after sitting for 2 months it would not start, until I charged it and then I noticed it was a Samsclub battery and drove there and they gave me 50% off any battery I wanted. I like the AGM batteries. Optima's were great until they started making them in Mexico. So, I figure this one may be made like the old Optimas. If not I have a 3 year 100% free replacement warrenty.

Those specs are about right....800CCA type 34 is the main issue.
I had to fit a larger battery in my CRD.....fits the Mercedes ML500 diesel I think.

I had to extend the battery tray to get it to fit but that was all I could get here in SA.

My original battery only lasted about 4 years and that is in a warm climate!

Before changing the battery make sure the battery connectors are clean and tight, the negative battery lead going to the chassis is clean and tight and the grounding strap grounding the engine to the chassis is clean and tight on both ends. In the UK you have a chance of salt roads causing these metal areas to rot away!:(

If you hit a good one, they go a long way.

Way back in the day when they first came out, my brother worked at a shop and they sold them. He put one in his truck. The original went past 10 years. Not so much anymore though.
