Have you thought of sandblasting it? That would get all of the paint and rust off and would get it ready for paint

 

i'm curious as well, my high lift is red and really rusted, i want to paint it black.q

 

After sandblasting it I would follow up with a good coat of primer and then some farm implement paint with the mix in hardener. (you can buy it at any tractor supply store) This will make the paint super hard once it is dried and keep it from weathering and wearing as much.

 

Sand blasting and implement paint sounds like a good idea. I've never had to have anything sandblasted, so are there shops, like machine shops, that'll do it for you?

 

Ya you've just gotta check around, I know that a paint/body shop will have one for sure, some of the machine/fabricating shops should have one too. Check around the different places to get some competitive pricing, it shouldn't cost too much since it's just a hi-lift.

A couple of years ago, I bought an old Jackal (name brand) high lift jack. It was @ 30 years old and all rusty. I used Rustoleum rust-reformer (black)on it. It suposedly bonds with the rust, to prevent it from rusting more. I just took it all apart and just got all the dirt and loose rust off and sprayed it on. It looks the same today as the day I sprayed it.

 

Yea I'm going to have to sand mine and re-paint it with some rattle can soon. Heck if the Jack somehow gets to the point of no return they aren't too expensive. Costs about the same as a tank of gas these days..

Mine came with my jeep and it wasn't put together right, and it was missing an important bolt. I thought about buying a new one rather than rebuilding & painting it.

sandblast it and if you want to spend the money have the pieces powder coated

 

I just buff the rust off mine with a dremel tool and wheel.

Then I hit it with a couple of coats of red rustoleum paint.

 

Is that from mounting it to the outside of the Jeep?

 

i wire wheeled mine with a angle grinder and painted it

 

Paint will not hold up unless you have a way to bake it on. I would not guess more than $20 to powder coat just the one part.

 

POR-15 right over everything and never worry about it again.

 

EZ-OFF Oven Cleaner (spray can) makes a good paint/grease remover. Spray it on, let it soak, hose it off with water. The lye eats the paint off.
