Rear disc brakes - parking brake seized? I can't get the rotor off!

Hi,

I was trying to change my rear rotors and pads today and got the drivers side pretty easily. I get over the passenger side and I can't get the damn rotor off. It just won't budge. I guess the parking brakes are seized in some way, but I can't figure out how to get them loose. I've tried loosening off the star wheel, beating on it with a hammer to try to knock it loose and nothing will work. I lifted both sides and tried spinning the wheels, applying and then disengaging the parking break and a bunch of other stuff. Been at it for 3 hours now.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this mother off?

With new pads and rotor on only one side, can I cause any damage by driving it around? I always hear that you should do both sides at the same time, but for a temporary time frame will it cause any problems?

TIA!

I guess technically it's not really seized, but something is preventing me from removing the rotor.

I thought that might be the problem. I hit the damn thing pretty hard and it wouldn't separate.

Your problem is that the "drum" part of your rotor have a lip at the edge that is preventing you from pulling the rotor. I have seen this before, just be carefull whan pulling the rotor, you might end up with bent up hardware... But it should be changed anyway. Also you need to have that rotor turned whan you get it out...

I'm trying to replace the rotor, that's what started this. How do I get the shoes to contract enough to get pas the lip?

One thing I did notice was that the actuator lever (where the cable connects to the drum components) doesn't go in as far as the one on the drivers side.

Have you taken off the star washers that are on at least 2 wheel studs? They are used on the assembly line to hold the rotors in place. These can blend in pretty good sometimes. And no they dont always get put on but ya never know.

Sometimes the rotor rusts to the axle flange. You might try some penetrating oil aroud the lug bolts, followed by some sharp raps with a hammer.
I just went through the same thing and this was my problem. I didn't use any oil, I just hulked-up and beat it with a dead blow hammer for a while, then sat down and put my feet up against the frame for leverage and pulled like hell.

It came off in a cloud of rust and brake dust.
