Ordering PCM / Does mileage have to match exactly?

Well there's horror stories out there for sure but I'm going to try it. I'm planning on ordering from Auto Zone so I have someone to yell at in person! I've heard if you have factory security, there can be an issue. Does the mileage you specify at the time you order have to match exactly when it's installed???

Mileage is stored in the PCM and BCM, BCM controls what is displayed but IIRC, the PCM mileage is what shows up on a scan tool capable of reading it (smog station?).

If it's off by a few miles it doesn't matter.

AFAIK, all obd2 have a mileage in the PCM (confirmed with other mopar of the time). The BCM is what feeds the dashboard, and it keeps it's own mileage based on the VSS, similarly the ODO in the overhead keeps it's mileage internally.

Doesn't make a difference for driving (plenty of 96-98 with JY PCM's), a dealer or other DRB3 owner could match them exactly if you wanted. I'm guessing that it was part of the federal OBD2 spec that the PCM know the mileage, but chrysler didn't feel the need to have the BCM get the info from the PCM.

All I can offer is the 97-98 are the same part# while the 96 has a different number. Someone said recently, excuse the memory, that the only purpose storing the mileage was to prevent roll back. But then you would have to ask how is that so. If you can slap a lower mileage bcm in and get a lower reading. The key may be as Mr R. mentioned in his thread, that the serial numbers not matching may have a play in all this. The DRB will show the serial number for the module it is reading. Thats all I got.:)

edit: I am referring to the BCM.

In my experience, i have had 4 different PCMS, two of them used. All of them ran at least 30k. Never experienced anything that would lead me to believe it cared about a VIN or serial number. And it may be my low end generic scanner, but it cannot find a VIN number.

So, our combined experience levels still leaves us guessing at what kind of voodoo is going on in there.

In searching around for MrR I sent him this link on the 96-98 Cardone PCM/ECM. It gives somewhat of an explanation why the VIN and mileage aren't required in the programming for the 96-97 but is for the 98.

http://my.cardone.com/techdocs/PT%2079-0001A.pdf

There has to be more to this than just SRI (service interval reminder) mileage and maybe this is just a Cardone thing although they say it's Chrysler's. But it does say it needs to pass on this mileage along from the PCM to other components.

I looked up the Autozone PCM's for the 98 and most are Cardone which are pretty darn pricey. But I wouldn't go on the cheap to save $20 and buy a 'Blue Streak' brand.
Good luck.

I think i read that too Uni. Maybe that's where I picked up that piece of info, I remember learning a lot from their site. This was in 2008 so...you know...

Somewhere there's a post that the ZJ PCMs digress from the Chrysler strategies mentioned in the Cardone file you posted in that they installed the ability to store the info but never integrated / fully implemented the mileage programming. They did it mostly to appease the Feds. Sorta like a back room drug deal where they got a pass for trying to do what the gubmint wanted.

Blue Streak is not a good name for a PCM :p

I have seen the vin stored in the driver door module using the DRB before. I don't remember what I was using it to do. Could have just been watching DRB tv:laugh:

FWIW, I just put a Cardone PCM in my 98 ZJ last month. The one that was in there was actually a Cardone PCM (don't know how old - I recently bought the ZJ). Anyways, I was nervous about swapping it out (even though I was replacing a known bad one) but the Jeep fired up and ran great.

And I didn't know it, but my ZJ was a California emissions Jeep (so I had to make sure I got the right PCM).

The instructions for the warranty said I had to have the VIN uploaded (flashed) into the PCM. So I brought it to the local Jeep dealer, and they told me they had to do it with the PCM in the vehicle, and they had to pull the equipment out of storage to do so (since it was "so old"). The dealer told me at the same time they would upload any updates that have occured since 1998. And it would take a couple of hours. Fine; I dropped it off the night before.

Well the next day and $120 later I picked it up, and they said the Cardone part already had any and all updates already installed. The odometer was correct too.

I got mine at O'Reillys - a Cardone part. In reading before I bought it, that was the recommended brand to get. It wasn't cheap, but it's not worth trying to save a few bucks if it leaves you stranded somewhere.

Some good info army RN! I would assume Autozone sells the same Cardone PCM/ECM's that O'Reillys does.

Below are the Cardone units I had looked up before for DCBeavdry's 98 4.0 in Arizona with Fed emissions on Autozone.

http://www.autozone.com/engine-management/engine-control-computer/jeep/grand-cherokee-4wd/1998/6-cylinders-s-4-0l-mfi

Guess I don't quite understand why the prices are the same for the Fed un-flashed vs flashed units? And some don't require additional programming while others say the programming needs to be done on the vehicle.

Not sure if it has to do with the OE matching numbers but it would be nice to get one w/o having to take it to the dealer for an additional $120 programming cost you may be able to avoid.

It's too bad you probably can't use the promo discount codes below for ordering online and shipped to home. But if you order a plug-and-play Cardone which doesn't need additional on-vehicle programming the "WIND20" code give you 20% off online orders over $100 or the "SHIELD25" code for a $25 gift card for each $100 you spend online. This can be seen in the below 1st promo.

But if you have to supply the store with your VIN/mileage this may be a mute point. Wouldn't hurt to ask the specific Autozone. I'm probably late on this and should have posted it last week.

Late CA emissions ZJs have a leak detection pump for the evaporative emissions system whereas Federal emissions does not. If you use a CA PCM in a Federal vehicle you'll get a check engine light because the PCM is trying to actuate a non-existent pump. You can use a Federal PCM in a CA vehicle though since it won't try to actuate the pump because it's not programmed to look for it and actuate it.

And its fixed...

Got the PCM from JC Whitney. Good price and quick delivery. ALL random stall / no start issues resolved. Used to quickly stall out while driving then resume. Or just not start. Or backfire like a mother while driving. All done. Running all better now. Never needed mileage programmed but needs to have VIN programmed in PCM to resolve all issues.
