Max tire size on stock CJ 5/6/7/8

Hey Everyone,

I searched for the answer but couldn't find anything. Which is strange cause I know it has to be there.

I am looking at various CJ's to possibly buy and was wondering what the max tire size for CJ 5/6/7/8 would be with stock suspension? I would like to run 32 BFG's if possible.

Don't think you will fit 32's on a stock rig. I have 30's on one of my CJ7's and they fit and look great, that's one size above stock 235's. I have wondered if I might could get 31x11.50's or 245's but not sure. I have seen 31x10.50's on a stock rig but don't know if it rubbed or not, I remember thinking that they looked like a close fit height wise and that the only other thing that you might could do would be to go from 10.50's to 11.50's on width but I haven't tried it myself and if you was able that'd be the limit I'd think without lifting it some. I was curious if the 31's rubbed when the owner took it off-roading as the suspension flexed.

Sweet, good to know. The owner wasn't around the one I seen on the parking lot of a local steak house. Just remember thinking the suspension looked stock and the height of the 31x10.50's filled the wheel wells pretty good and wondering if it rubbed when he went offroad.

235's is the stock size anyway for the CJ7's and I thought all the later model CJ5's as well.

Something you might consider 30x9.50's on your CJ5 if you to want just a tiny amount of extra height without being too much; the 30x9.5 is just a hair taller than the 235's but is a just a little wider in relation to the height and I think that's makes it a better looking tire when mounted on the machine than the 235's.

This is great, so we now know that the 31x10.50 fits ok on a stock CJ7 ... but does anyone know about the 31x11.50?

That extra inch of width makes it a nice looking tire when mounted up, but does the extra inch make it too wide to prevent rubbing when offroading?

Here is a pic of my '83 CJ-7 Limited with 30x9.50x15's and this was actually taken the week before I replaced the drooping factory body mounts.
I replaced them with a new body mount kit but in the stock height, so no lift but also no longer 30 years old and drooping. Now it has even a little more clearance....

Sweet :2thumbsup:

How's your power and MPG's with them?

Of course that may also depend on which tranny and gear ratio you have...

My tranny is the 5 speed and my axle code DD so should be 2.73's with the locking diff, though I haven't verified the ratio yet. I have no reason to believe the original owner ever changed them though.

I'm a little concerned that 31's might be too much of a tire for the 2.73 gears, even though the 30's feel just fine.

I'm getting 21-26 depending on what kind of road I'm driving on and how I'm driving it with the T-5, 2.73's and 30x9.50's (no clue what they weigh). I have a brand new Carter BBD carb, my best tank was 26.4 but that was taking it easy one afternoon on a 200 mile trip where I took the old two lane blacktop at 55mph just taking it easy and seeing how good I could get. Virtually no stops and when I did was easy stops/starts, etc. Usually my driving is a mix of the two lane between my ranch and town which is 15-17 miles both directions depending on the route I take and then in town (small town of 15,000) driving once I get there and with a mix of all that I get 21-24 most tanks, my worst tank so far since putting on the new carb was 18.8 which was just this very last tank that I filled up today, but that included some driving in the rain the 2nd half of that tank and then the rain turned to snow so the last bit of the tank was in 4x4.

One of the things that I need is to actually correct my speedo for my 30's, I know exactly how much it's off, and also use both an iPhone app in addition to my GPS to determine my actual MPG's. But I'd still like to correct my speedo. Many places sell replacement speedometer pinions to correct for different size tires but all the charts stop at the 3.07 gear ratio and don't even show the 2.73 ones on their charts to order a new speedo cable pinion. If anyone knows of someone who has a chart and sells the correct pinion for 2.73 gears please share it. I think Seabass said in a PM he has the same gear ratio that I do so he's gonna need that chart as well if he changes his tires. I need to know the correct speedo pinion color and/or part numbers for both 30 inch and 31 inch tires.

24 tooth gear is correct for 2.73's running a 31" tire. I have two Jeeps with 2.73's and 31's. They aren't awesome, but they do well enough for my needs. My 3rd Jeep has 3.31's and 31's.

Not sure what you'll need for 30's and 2.73's.....Using this calculation it looks like you'd need a 25 tooth gear.

Remember, you'll need a new speedo gear housing for 21-25 tooth gears.

I think the 32's could fit a stock CJ given the stock suspension was one of the HD versions that had an inch or two of factory lift. My 73 still has the original 10 leave leaf springs as it was a snow plow Jeep. The 30 x 9.5 x 15's fit easily with lots of clearence. My deciscion to go with this tire was also additionally influenced by the fact that mine has no fender flares and I wanted to keep it that way.

On my 1985 CJ7, I ran 31s on a stock suspension just fine. Rubbed a tad at full turn but the suspension sagged a little also. I have the I6 four speed tranny with 2.73s I think, I don't know if that's the ratio or not, can someone possibly help me? I went to the beached with a full soft top, and doors, fully loaded jeep of gear and my dad, I pulled 8-9mpg at around 70-75. Never like to go quite that fast. I am now lifted 4" with 33s so my days of being speedy Gonzales are over. 60 max now.
