Doodie in my air box

Looks like a mouse decided to use my air box as an outhouse. Little bugger must have crawled in through the opening through the grill.

Any opinions on why the air inlet is mostly covered? Supposed to keep rain water out? Seems like it restricts airflow.

The ambient air duct likely is designed that way to keep the rain, snow, sand, dust, dirt, etc, from blowing directly into the air box.

It is kind of difficult to see where the openings are in your photo and below is a diagram of the duct from the parts list. Both the 4.7 and 4.0 use the same duct part.
