I need a 3 speed transmission for a 1971 CJ5 with the Dauntless V6. The case on the present one is cracked and shot. Any suggestions on where to look for something at a reasonable price (as cheap as possible without compromising quality) at the moment I only use it for plowing. I live in Conn.
Thanks in advance for any help.

confusion

Thanks for the info but I'm running into conflicting spec's. To have a better understanding of exactly what I'm looking I referenced a couple of manuals. Haynes (CJ Jeeps 1949 - 1986) says the transmission is the T86AA. From the book Jeep 4X4 performance handbook by Jim Allen there's a factory Jeep Transmission Chart that list the T14 as the one and in a note says the casting number is T14A or 1302 on the housing. I got a hold of the T14A and the mechanic working on my Jeep says the shaft is too long won't work.
I think it came out of a "72" Jeep. If that's the case can it be corrected?
The case on the original tranny cracked so there's no chance to rebuild it.
I'm not a mechanic but love the Jeep. Any advice?

Stock '71 3spd with Dauntless would definitely be T-14. T86 stopped sometime around '68 or early '69. The input shafts will be different from the '72-'75 models. You need to find one out of a '69ish through '71 model. If you get one from a '69-'70 it will have an adapter on the transmission that will make the shaft appear to short. Just remove it since your '71 bell has the adapter cast into it. Like I mentioned above, the classifieds at earlycj5 are going to be your best source; I just sold a good running T-14 on there 6 months ago for $70, IIRC. Post a wanted ad, and keep scanning the for sale.

Another option is to do a T-18 swap:

Wanted add is posted!

Again, Thanks for the help, As long as I did it right the add is posted at Early CJ5.com. Is it possible to change the input shaft since it's too long on the tranny I have? And what about the T18 swap? Should I look for a T18? So much for the swap information, just got back from your story and I went that route once before and can't do it again. In 1973, if I remember right I bought a new Golden Eagle. I decided I wanted 11x16 Armstrongs and it began a whole new adventure for me. Leaf springs had to be rearched, Wedges in the rear and front end to compensate for the new height, I was blowing a universal a week, new shocks, I don't remember what else. Rolled it over twice, too high and on and on. Sold it, got married, 3 kids, 83 wagoneer for the family, and here I am back again, hooked on a 71. Must be in the blood.

I think maybe that input shaft could be changed out. I've not messed with one yet. It's a fairly light duty trans that's usually just cheaper to replace than fix.

Some would argue the CJ reached its zenith in 1971. You should check out the forum on earlycj5, too. Bunch of good folks there. Post up some pics of your JEEP when you get the chance.

Personally, I have a low opinion of the T14 and have the honor of seeing a number of them fail (two of them my own). A swap to a stronger trans is a good idea. While I opted for the T18, Novak makes an SM/t case adapter that seems pretty slick to me. Might do a quick jaunt over to their website and take a look.

Novak Conversations, $498 to adapt, T18 4 speed, where am I going with this? I bought this jeep to plow. It was a bear until I blew first. Then I plowed in second, took off the plow to sand my driveway, all 300 ft. of it uphill, s curved, and after the plow was off the reduced resistance caused the remaining gears to come apart. I started out to just throw in a cheap replacement tran, came clean about my experiences with some jeeps and now I'm getting hooked again, just like I was 35 years ago. My Jeep is in GOOD condition, needs a gas tank, I ran the lines to a 5 gal container sitting on the floor in front of the passenger seat. It has posi 4 (I'm not sure what you really call it but when I shift into it there's no getting stuck). Top is newer and in fine condition. Red body. No major rust that I'm aware of. I even saved the hub caps from my wagoneer with Jeep on them and put them on it. I'll send a pic when I can.
A mechanic has the jeep right now and I want to get it out of there so if I come across a T14 cheap enough first I'll put it and and continue the rebuild. The only thing is once it's together it may stay that way?

First step? Find a T18? What's the difference from the T19? Thank you.

Most T-19 have the 4:1 ratio. If you've got the coin, grab yourself a 2wd Ford T18 and put the Novak adapter on and be done with it.

If you're thrifty and have some time, you can find a non-CJ Jeep T-18 like I did and swap out the input shaft. The CJ T-18 usually fetch their weight in gold, but the FSJ can be had for pretty cheap because of the input shaft. You'll need to open up your Buick bell housing, but that's no biggie and is detailed in that link I sent you above.

SM420 is a great trans, if you can find one. The SM465 is also a stout trans and cheap/easy to find, but the T18 fits in the early models like factory. I guess my first choice would be T18, then SM420 because of size not necessarily 1st gear, then SM465.

Since I already have the T14 from the 72 with the longer shaft, 11.5 inches, I'm trying to check out what it would cost me to swap it. I recieved an E from someone who has done it and says it's not a problem. Can you tell me what the best resource for new Jeep parts is? I aleast get it back to plow for now and keep up my search for a T18, not to mention save some "coin"
for the conversation.

That's a good question, why T18 for the driveway? If you follow the thread you'll see that it started out with just replacing the T14 plowing, parking and moving on. The more I researched the more I realized that I'm heading toward a restoration. Money is the factor and I will make it happen. Right now I'm looking into taking the input shaft out of the T14 with the cracked case and swaping with the 72 T14 shaft just to get it back and be able to use it. It hasn't stopped snowing since it went down. And we're looking at more snow 5-8 inches tonight. We had a house fire two years ago unfortunately in a 200 year old farm house and we're restoring the barn. My brother and I are doing ALL the work. If it wasn't for that I'd have the coin to do it right, now. Thanks for the additional info on the T19.

Some Success But...

As suggested I posted adds looking for the T14 or T18 what ever I can afford and help me get my jeep back. I've gotten responses from from Arizona all the way to Alaska. Unfortunately nothing local yet although I'm working on some leads. Someone E'd me about a T 14 from a 71 but it has a "Spicer 18". Can someone help me out with that?
