I need the 46re. I just wondered if it was the same that the 5.9 dodges are using, opens up my JU. donor search if that is what I need to do.. I will know soon. In cased you missed it I also have the 5.9 in the zj

nope, jeep starters are passenger side and dodge starters are driver's side. the only 46re you can use is a jeep one.
X2 , here's a pic of a dodge Ram 46 RE , note the starter below the exhaust manifold

Thanks ratmonkey and NewfieZJ.
I USED car-parts.com to find what I NEED , I will make sure I am getting a 46re out of the ZJ. I Think I am in luck and will have the transmission by Thursday and do the swap by the weekend. Thanks for the heads up on the Jeep /Dodge difference:thumbsup::thumbsup:

What's wrong with your 46RE? Mine is starting to act up and I think it might have a slip between 2 and 3.
That is how it all started, I did have that slip between 2-3 for a long time. However, I think I f-ed up with trans breather relocation., because symptoms became increasingly worse After a Rousch Creek Trip ,which was a 3.5hr trip to the park each way. still not sure.
I can tell you that on my filter /fluid change , it was not what you want to see in the pan. Plenty of aluminum and metal flake atf-4, Hell my magnet looked the size of a chocolate covered doughnut:rofl::rofl:. Well after my 3rd or 4th fluid/filter change I have finally lost all forward gears. :brickwall

I got lucky last summer & picked up a spare tranny out of a rolled 5.9 for $250. Now I have one waiting if my tranny goes out or a core to send in when I'm ready to get a "built" one. After the SC install I think I'm going to need it.:D

I just paid for min 30 min ago. 325$ with 3mo. warranty. I pick it up in the AM. You can bet I won't mess up relocating the breather on this one. it was looking like my Jeep would be down a bit longer. at this rate. I will make my weekend wheeling trip.

Wow , 5.9 with the SC that is going to be sick!

There is a hand full on thespeedfreeks.net. Mine will be about the third one on there in Denver. However I know there are a couple of others in Denver that are not on the boards.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but would a dodge 46re work with the jeep 44re or 46re bell housing?
Take a look at an auto tranny sometime and you'll see the answer to that rather plainly.

Autos, for the most part, do not have separate bell housings like most manuals do.

No, the 42RE was only behind the 4.0's. The 93-95 5.2's had a 46RH, 96-98 5.2's have 44RE's and ONLY the 98 5.9 used the 46RE.
This brings up a question for you guys. I recently purchased a bone stock 98 ZJ Laredo with 130k on it. Build date on the door is 5-98. It was never wheeled, I don't think is ever saw a dirt road! Went to change the tranny filter today and the 42RE filter is the wrong one. Filter I took out is a mopar part # 52118789. That would make me think the tranny is the 46RE not the 42RE. Did I mention the ZJ has the 4.0!! Am I missing something or has anyone else come across a 98 or any other year Jeep with the 4.0 and a
46RE behind it?

you might want to bring that up with the parts clerk and ask him why he gave you the wrong one .

He gave you a WJ 42RE filter , no , they are not the same , your part # is 3515 996 (confirmed on parts lists for 98&99) .

Return filter , submit new parts # and get the right one :cheers2:

It is a 98 ZJ with a 4.0
The first filter was for a 98 ZJ with a 4.0 and it was the wrong one.
The second filter is for a 98 ZJ with the 5.9 and it was the correct one.
??????????????????
Your logic is flawed, the 42RE, 44RE, 46RH, and 46RE all share the same filter.

You have a 42RE.
