I just put a new alternator and battery on my 93 yj because of a squealing problem- took it for a drive to test it and now it is jerking and revving up high rpms and I was only going 20 - seems to do it after it changes gear to 2nd (auto trans.) The squealing is gone which is great, but I don't think I can drive it like this, sounds like it is going to blow the engine when it revs up really high. I am only 17 - 1st jeep and learning. Any help will be appreciated as tomorrow is the 1st day of school, and don't think I can drive it like this.

Maybe the computer reset and is re-adjusting. Or, you accidently knocked a vacume line from it's placement. Probably the computer though is my bet. If it is, you will just have to give it some time to get to know your engine again. Sounds really high though, what is it idling at in nuetral?

Start by checking you fault codes. If you havent done it before there is a writeup in the FAQ. Do a battery reset and see if it clears. Do a check on the wiring harness for any connectors, maybe you have a loose ground wire or connector. Do a good check on the fuses in the PDC. It does sound like a vacuum leak. With the vehicle in a well ventilated area(outside preferably).Get a can of starting fluid and lightly spray quick shots around the engine compartment listening for and idle change. Do not spray a large amount and let the either clear. Let us know what you find

ok, I put new fuses in - 2 of them were blown (alt 1 and alt 2), but here is the kicker - the squealing came back when I put the new fuses in. The jerking and revving have gone away - but the squeal is back. The squealing goes away when I take out the fuses, but I think the revving and jerking will come back. Any suggestions as I am stumped!!!

Could it be possible that with the fuses in there, there is now a large load on the alternator from all accessories? And with a slightly loose belt, the alternator would squeal.

When I was working on the Wrangler one time I tightened the alternator down to what I thought was an acceptable tightness. The belt felt pretty tight. I started it up and it would squeal when I turned on the lights. I finally found the 1/2" square hole on the alternator bracket that you use to tighten the belt. Using that hole and a large wrench I was able to get the belt tight enough so as not to squeal anymore with any kind of draw/load on it.

And maybe the revving and jerking have to do with a low voltage level?

Hey thanks for the advice, I bought a new gatorback belt and made sure it was tight and the squealing is gone. The jerking and revving have gone away with the new fuses. My jeep is back to normal - for now.
