So like many others I have had the door check pin issue where it pops everytime I open the door. I have greased it but that doesn't seem to help as the hole has gotten wallowed out. The same happened on my passenger side but for the amount of work and cost of a new door check mechanism it wasn't worth it. A little over a year later and its making the noise again even with grease.

I'm thinking we could let this thread be a collection of ideas on how people have fixed it. First off I don't suggest just taking it off as the door can open too much and damage both the fender and the door as well as the hinge.

Here are a few ideas I've come up with starting from the easiest:

-putting a larger pin in the hole
-drilling out the hole and putting in a bolt/nut with washers
-using a strap similar to TJ doors (this might be good for you guys who take off the doors)

If anyone has any input on what they have done or ideas they have feel free to post it. I'm going to be doing the bolt/nut fix soon and will take pictures.

I have a small bolt and a nylock nut replacing the pin, and also a half inch chunk of XJ battery cable wedged in there to act as a bumper and deaden the pop noise. Mostly sounds like a normal door now.

so is it the little pin holding the arm to the door that pops or the arm itself inside the door check that pops when you open and close the door?

wow what a coincidence i just replaced those pins today! my holes are wallowed out but the pins did definately help a bit. What i did notice is that the door check arm is slightly rusted and covered in road grit kinda. I took some brake cleaner, white lithium grease, pb, and a grease gun and cleaned it up.

Took the brake clean and sprayed everything down, after this i wiped the arm up and sprayed white lithium on it, after that i again wiped it down, after making sure it was as clean as can be i put some grease on my finger and covered it on all sides. My door is soooo much better, the holes are walled but its much quieter, i also think a lot of noise is coming from the inner door mechanism.

weird, my hole is not wallowed out at all. but both of my door check mechanisms have self destricted, one of which ruined the door where it mounts.

mine pops loudly but it dosnt seem to be wallowed out
im going to be getting a new door anyways because its cracked on the inside so it wont be a bother after that

the strap is a great idea but what about using a section from an old belt? i read somewhere that some guys use that because it doesn't stretch and you can adjust it if you want to change how much it opens. i was considering doing that to mine tomorrow, but it kind of is just an idea

Well mine has a wallowed out hole on the pin side AND the check mechanism pops.:thumbdown: I tried putting a bolt in there but now the bolt pops a little. Much quieter but not completely gone. I'm thinking I will find a way to mount a strap there. My friend has those on her TJ and it seems like it works much better.

Those two bolts that hold the check mechanism inside the door would be a good place for a bracket for the strap to attach. Then I'd just have to mount it to the bracket on the body that holds the pin.

I sense a write-up... :highfive:

Had the same problem...The holes in mine were definately worn and enlarged... I took the bracket off that the pin goes in...Filed and sanded it down and used some JB Weld to fill in the holes...Carefully re-drilled it out after it hardened...Been about 6 months now and still no "POP"...

another option for the popping sound

The bracket attached to the door frame had completely snapped. Got a used bracket for next to nothing and ordered a replacement pin (pack of 4) for $6. The old pin was still in the arm passing through the broken bracket end. I had to hacksaw the pin off, whew that wasn't fun ! The holes in the bracket are a bit smaller than the hole in the arm so even though the new pin is held in place I was getting the loud pop every time door opened due to the play. I found a thick rubber washer that I was able to put the pin through snugly. Good so far but now the outer diameter of the washer needed to be shaved to size so that it would slide into the larger arm hole. A bit of finagling and I managed to line everything up. Wow ! it works but don't know long term. Hope so. Cheers.

I ended up replacing the entire assembly. I bought the door check arms and the pins from ebay. They weren't too expensive, and well worth it. I tried an assortment of bolts and pins but none seemed to work quite right. One actually fell out and my door almost got ripped off the hinges by a strong wind. That was the day I ordered the new parts.

I got a grommet kit from HF. My plan is to take a length of seat belt. Put 4 grommets in it (2 in each end) and bolt it in place of the old door check check bars.

The driver's door on my 97 used to pop, and I changed the bracket on the body and the pin. About 2 years later, the pin broke. I've got spare door check bars from my parts XJ, but I don't want to install another one.
