Won't drive straight

Hello everyone and thank you for checking out this thread! I'm new here and to car repair in general, so don't beat me up too bad (yet) ;)

I put in as much info on my jeep as I know. Unfortunately alot I wasn't sure about but if you need an answer on anything thats missing, I'll find out.

The problem I'm having is the jeep feels unstable at speeds over 30 mph. I took it on the freeway ONCE and feared for my life. I never gripped a steering wheel so tight at 60mph trying to keep it straight.

My end goal is to be able to take this on a 200 mile trip up north in May (Michigan). Right now I'm afraid to go to the gas station because it won't stay straight.

The guy in this thread has similar issues, but I don't have vibration (that I remember) and I don't have a lift kit. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/cant-keep-her-straight-268064/

It feels like you have to "catch" the jeep as it sways back and forth. Any bump in the road is a religious experience. I just bounce between the lines while I'm doing 35-40 mph. I really don't dare to go faster because it really feels out of control.

So far I've been able to glean the following information from other threads / questions people have asked:

- Lugs are tight on all wheels.
- No lift kit, stock suspension AFAIK.
- Power steering box has been tightened, possibly too much because the wheel is slow to straighten itself out when its been turned.

Possible problems:
-Steering dampener (this might be missing, i didn't see anything with a spring under there)
-Ball joints
-Wheel bearings
-Sway bar
-Trackbar
-Drag link
-Tie rod

Possible solutions:
-Replace power steering box.
-Replace steering shaft (done)
-Balance tires (has not been done)
-Align tires (also has not been done)

Repairs made to date (Most I'm pretty sure are unrelated):
-Replaced steering shaft and that took some play out of it, but it still feels unstable at anything over 30mph.
-Tightened power steering box
-Replaced exhaust from the manifold to tailpipe (everything except the manifold)
-Replaced serpentine belt
-Replaced oil pickup
-Replaced oil pan
-Replaced battery
-Replaced stereo
-Replaced internal door handle
-Removed rear seat

My biggest question is, where should I start? Next question, what order should I attack these things?

Thank you for reading and for any advice you have to offer.

If I where you I would go to a tire shop and get a balance and alignment, then see how it goes from there in a YJ every bump is a religious experience for all of us, but you kinda get used to it. Also you should test you shocks the might be worn which is why you Jeep is going from side to side.

To start, find a buddy, have him/her turn the steering wheel wile you look at EVERYTHING under the front of the jeep. Also, wile your buddy is turning the wheel, give the steering shaft a look. You want to look for play in any of the moving parts.

The next thing to do would be to raise the front of the jeep so that the front tires are off of the ground. grab the tire at the 6 and 12-O-clock positions, and push/pull on the tire to see if it wiggles. If it dose move, watch the back side to see where it's moving, pay close attention to the ball joint and wheel bearing areas. This test can also be done by placing a pry bar/pipe under the tire, and lifting up on it(again, with the tires off of the ground).

It also might not hurt to check all of the spring, shackle, and track bar bushings on it as well. If the suspension is all stock, and the bushings are worn, there is a chance that the axle may be shifting side to side.

Right on muddy93!

We did exactly what you said with grabbing the steering wheel and we looked at everything. We found out the nut that tightened up the steering column to the power steering gear wasn't tight enough and there was play before the column would engage the power steering gear. At low speeds this wasn't noticeable but once you got moving, you could really feel it.

We tightened that up and it was night and day. There's other problems, but it's not unstable like it was before. I can confidently drive around now without fear of losing control ;)

Thanks for your help!
