WJ Power Steering Pressure Hose write-up

Hoping this helps someone down the road, as this leak above the pump seems to be a common issue.

I recently replaced my power steering pressure hose on my JGC 4.7 HO, it's simple and not simple at the same time.

You will need a 13/16 wrench and LOTS of PB blaster. And if you're like me, a hammer might not be a bad idea either.

I started by sucking all the fluid out of the pump with a turkey baster, then popping off the bolt covers on each end of the hose. Then unscrewed the top bolt (the connector to the pump) and immediately found the problem. The o-ring that sits in between was pretty much not existant. In my case, I already had the replacement hose so I went ahead and installed it anyways. But if you have this problem, you COULD probably get away with replacing the o ring. If you decide to replace the hose, you will need to have a keen eye and a tight grip, lining the hose up with the hole under the car is a pain in the behind. Once you get that it, don't forget to relatch the plastic clip and refill your resovoir.

This project costed me about 65 dollars and 2 hours of work time, which isn't bad considering I was losing almost half a tank of power steering fluid every 4 days!

gavd...thank you for posting the resolution to this.
I had previously posted in the other thread from mid-May that the hose was the issue ...but I was speaking from the experience of a 2000 4.7. Glad to see it's not the pump in both cases.

Now that I also have an '04 HO, I need to do this exact repair and am curious about the hose you swapped. I was under and around it last night looking for where the leak is coming from. I did not see any hoses leaking...but I'm not convinced I was able to see everything. It appears the leak is coming from the pulley area.
...Where are the bolt covers you're referring to...and the plastic clip? I did not see either.

Can I get the application of the 13/16 wrench? (I thought the whole jeep was metric.) Got a pic or part number of the hose?

Thanks again!

Won't have access to take pictures of my Jeep since I'm out of town until Tuesday. So I'll do my best to explain where the leak was coming from etc. In my case, the leak was coming from a metal hose that connects to the top of the power steering reservoir. The leak was literally at the connection. Now at the connection, there is a small peice of metal that slips around the bolt to prevent it from moving, those slide right off and allow access to the bolt. I'm 99% sure I used 13/16 to get it off, but maybe I had the size wrong. I've also heard of the leak coming from the other end of that hose, which is under the front end, attaches to the radiator somewhere. It looks just the same on the bottom, and in my opinion it was easier to get off. So once you get both ends off, there is a plastic clip that holds the power steering hose to the front end, it will be obvious if you wiggle the hose a little. My recommendation is to go easy on that clip, it seemed very brail on mine. After that clip you can simply slide it right out and put the new one in the same way. When you're done, make sure the metal bolt clips are on there, the new hose didn't come with new ones. If the pressure hose doesn't fix the leak, which I doubt it won't , then the pump is most likely the problem, which isn't good lol. I attached a picture that gives you a general idea whrre to look for that connector on top of the resovoir, I can't do much better until I get home to my Jeep next week. Hope this helps, let me know if you have further questions

FWIW, you can buy just the o-ring for the upper hose fitting. I grabbed a Mopar one from Rock Auto, but have yet to install it on my wife's '03 4.7, so I can't say how well it works.

That being said, Mopar updated the pressure hose assembly sometime ago, and if you're not sure whether you have the updated version or not it may be worth it to replace the entire hose. In my case I replaced the hose with the updated version a few years back.

That's my plan...thanks as always 86cj. Thanks again gavd
that 20mm wrench is the size a lot of wrench sets do not have in them.........I tried a standard size a few times and didn't like the feel of it and if it's super tight it will round the nut and your stuck removing the pump and separating the tank from it to get it off.

For me it was a painless adventure. My crimp at top was leaking and dripping off oil filter on the 04. Grammies 04 did it too. Bought a mopar updated line for 54 dollars.

I also had the pressure line leaking at the crimp. This is the second time I replaced it. While in there I also replaced 2 return lines, the pump and reservoir. Now today I see the other pressure line is leaking slightly as it wore out on the plastic on top of the fan. I just zip tied a cut open hose around it for protection. I'll see how expensive this line is Monday and if I'll replace it or just repair it...I'm leaning towards replace as it is kind of rusty. Then move on to the trans cooler lines which one is leaking a little at the rad, I'll see if it's something simple. I've been putting off my front crank seal, til my power steering leak was taken care of, but i find new leaks after I fix one.

The power steering pressure hose on my '04 WJ 4.0l sprang a pinhole leak. I can see it spurting fluid when the engine is on. I've read a few posts about hoses developing leaks near crimps but this is not the case with mine. The is in a section of the reinforced rubber hose.

Before I go "all -in" and buy the MOPAR replacement hose, thought I'd ask for any recommendations or tips on other parts I may need for this job. For example, do you need extra o-rings? Or, if you replace this high pressure hose, is it recommended to replace any of the other PS hoses?

Thanks for any advice you can offer!
