Hey guys, a while back, my driver side heated seat went out, and I'm contemplating what would be the best course of action as far as repair, I know the seat will have to get cut up either way, and i have a seat cover so that's no big deal. I dont have the know-how to do it myself, and I dont know exactly where to start, I know these have a tendency to just short out, but I don't know exactly where the problem lies, whether bad heating element, shorted out, any tips?

Actually you don't have to cut the seat material up and can peal them back once you remove the hog-rings, clips, etc.. The most common problem is the heater element will burn through and no longer complete the circuit.

Unfortunately even the aftermarket Dorman replacement seat heater elements are hard to find for these WJ's lately.

Below is a pretty good video although it starts slow. The guy is soldering the wire back together for the heater element in it. There's also a part 2 link before the start of the comments. Good luck.

PS. there was also 2 recalls on these seat heaters. My 04 had both recalls fixed before I bought it and the passenger seat heater still doesn't work.

Below is the video.

Excellent advice from Uni as always! There are also "generic" seat heaters out there (Amazon/Ebay, etc) where you can cut the connection off your old, wire it to the new generic and lay it in place. I may be going this route soon. While you are in there you can "fix" your driver's left side cushion as well. Every one I have seen was smashed down from entry/exit. You may as well address that while you are in there.
