I have carb'd Chevy 350 in my '86. The hardest part is finding all the parts to work. I mated mine to an AX15 but mating to a Chevy auto is a bit easier. You will need to make sure your slip yoke on the drive shaft works or will need to steal the one off the donor Chevy. Doing this swap is time consuming and full of headaches, especially in a fuel injected Comanche. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

For the swap you will need a set of engine mounts, an upgraded radiator (mine is running perfect with a CSF 3 row Cherokee radiator), Sanderson block hugger heads (no other aftermarket headers I've found fit inbetween our rails) and you might want to think about beefing up the frame in the front a little.

No offense, but how original, a chevy V-8 in a jeep. Think outside the box. How about a hemie, or the new create ford boss 302, or an AMC 401. Anything but another fricken chevy engine in a jeep swap. I wouldn't put a chevy engine in a chevy personally. I mean it's your truck, just seems another kind of engine would have more of a cool factor, would be something different.

It has been done more times than you can count but the Chevy engine has the great advantage of the parts being dirt cheap. I mainly did it because I took out a GM 2.8L so might as well keep with a Chevy engine so my gauges work. Plus, all the brackets and conversion adapters are made for this setup already. I would have preferred to put a 351W in there and was planning on swapping from Chevy to Ford but I just can't justify doing the swap again since mine is already set up. If I were to do it again, I would go with the 351W and make all the brackets.

My one buddy is looking at putting a 4.7L V8 in his Cherokee since he can get that engine for dirt cheap to free. And another is looking at putting a 5.9L V8 into his Wrangler so I'm kinda the odd ball in my group. :)

Most of the gages answer back to standard sensors (with, for the AMC-built vehicles, were mostly GM anyhow,) although your tachometer will require an adapter to give a useful reading.

Advance Adapters makes a mount bracket to adapt to the Chevvy V8, which can save fabrication.

If I were going to go to the trouble to fab up a custom swap, I'd probably go for "cool factor" and see about, say, a Chevvy 6-292 (first choice) or a Ford 6-300 (second choice - the Cleveland Six is one of the very few Ford engines that I don't want to fill with Sakrete and use for a boat anchor...)

Or maybe a Chrysler 6-225?

There are a few companies that make conversions for the tach but they're all pretty pricey. I haven't been in a real rush since I just shift mine by speed or sound.

Cooling is a concern when building something past stock. Mine runs slightly hotter than I'd like (around 210) but am happy with it. Opening up the hood some should lower the temperatures slightly, which is next on my list of mods. I'm running a CSF 3 row open system Cherokee radiator with two stock electric fans.
