Ticking and rough idle

My 03 Liberty that all the sudden started making a loud ticking/tapping metallic noise from the passenger side of the engine and has a very rough idle to the point of shaking the whole car. The ticking increases with RPM.

I did an oil change and put in new spark plugs. While the plugs were out I did a compression test and all the cylinders were about the same at little over 180psi.

When removing the old plugs, the number 2 plug (passenger side front) was a little cleaner then the others and was wet with gasoline. I swapped the coil for one on the other side and there was no change. I checked the coil and it was producing a spark.

I took a piece of hose and listened around and the ticking seems to be coming from around where the the number 2 cylinder head and valve cover meet.

So now I am not sure where to go. Could a stuck open injector cause that loud of a ticking and rough idle? Or is it more likely a valve problem?

Thanks for any help,
Matt

Start with the simple answer....Bad or disinguaged plug wire. Double check that the plug wire is all the way seated on the plug or that it is not cracked or broken inside the shielding. Try replacing the wire in question with another wire. Could save you a tone of heartache.:tea:

No plug wires here, coils right on top of the plugs. I pulled each coil and put a grounded old plug in and all 6 had a nice strong spark. Swapped them around too. I plugged a bulb into each of the injector connectors and they blinked, so it looks like they are getting the signal. Pulled all the injectors and switched sides, still no change. I am going to take the valve covers off this week and see if I can find anything. Any thoughts let me know.

Thanks,
Matt

I got the valve cover off and the exhaust valve rocker was completely off on #2! It was just laying there down in a nook of the head between the valves. It took me a confused minute to locate it. How can this happen? The rocker looks normal, and the lash adjuster looks alright as does the top of the valve spring.

I ordered a valve spring compressor (I only have one of the head off c-clamp type) and am going to take a closer look at everything.

Any ideas why/how this would happen? I have not worked on any over head cams before.

Thanks,
Matt

did it all start on a cold start in the morning? sometimes the lash adjusters get gummed up and don't pump up like the should?

also could be cheap gas (epa minimun detergent). Cheap gas has olefins in it. and when the engine is gold olefins will stick a valve, because olefins are sticky when cold.

or it could be a bent valve.

or it could be a weak valve spring.

was the 3.7L maintained? do you know the history?

I think this post is bringing you more questions than answers.

On that side of the engine, the direction of cam rotation naturally wants to throw the exhaust rockers out of position if all the tolerances are not perfect. I'd suggest getting a new lash adjuster and rocker and assuming the rocker that popped off didn't damage any adjacent components, you should be ok.
