Anyone put a Spartan locker in a Dana 35? If so, what are your thoughts/ issues? I have an 06 TJ and am about to install 4:56's and Spartan lockers in the front and rear. I know the Dana 30 is alright with the locker. Just would like to hear from someone who has put a locker in their 35 (with no mods other than a re- gear) and how it has held up. My TJ does a bit of highway driving. Want to know if I should just return it before I go through with the install. Thanks in advance for your EXPERIENCED input.

It is well documented on this forum that locking a Dana 35, at any tire size, is not a good idea. They really are that weak and can break at any time, even from street driving. I broke a locked Dana 35 climbing a mound of dirt on 31's. However, a spartan locker in the Dana 30 is a great upgrade. What size tires are you going to run with those 4.56's?

doesn't anybody do any research anymore......search search search and if you can't find it.....than ask! jeesh i'm tired of the "New Posts" section of this forum being filled up with the same threads over and over again....

Seriously though..

I ran a locked 35 for about a year on 33" tires. Did fine until the cross pin snapped and hit the housing...snapped both axle shafts...could have happened to any axle tho
Exception to the rule.

I know tons of people that have done it. Hell, I did it for two years.

Why did I upgrade out of it? I hated being the one that held up a group of people wheeling when the shaft did break. I broke 5 shafts in that time. Everytime, it was on something that it should not have broken on (instance worth mentioning: axle was unlocked at the time, was pulling off the trail head, and onto the road, *SNAP*). This is note worthy, because you could pull out of a gravel driveway and replicate my exact circumstances.

Do not regear the Dana 35. It simply isn't worth it. Take the money from the locker, and put it into a D44, or an 8.8. Do a search, there are thousands of threads on this exact topic.

For those of you that have given input without some type of childish remarks, thanks. I am going to hold off on the install of the locker until I get the upgraded shafts for the 35 and do the c clip eliminator. That will happen when I get the rear disc brake kit.

Jerry- I especially enjoy reading your posts. Intelligent and mature.

For those of you with the remarks- I guess someone held a gun to your head and made you click on the thread.

Unlike the children making the remarks on this thread- I don't live in my parent's basement so I can spend all the money I make working at 7-11 on Jeep parts and internet porn.

I myself have a job that consumes a huge portion of my time. Sometimes a year at a time to have an all expenses paid trip to portions of the earth that no-one really wants to go to. It has its perks- I get paid to wheel in some really unique places with some expensive trail rigs. So excuse me if I don't have as much time as you to search the forum. I prefer to spend what little time I do have with my wife, kids, dog and working on my Jeep, house or jet skis. Using them too. So children, lock the basement door, pull out the Vaseline and find your happy sock and do one of your favorite past times.

As for me I will continue to read posts by intelligent, mature individuals like Jerry or Mr Blaine.

I guess I am the exception to the rule then. Ran my TJ in the mud and sand locked with 33's, 35's then 36's, it had a 2.5l 5spd 4.88's, and a lockright. Twisted the splines on a shaft once, thats it. I carried a spare carrier and shafts, but guess I was lucky. The internet had me afraid it was a timebomb....This time around I made sure to purchase a TJ with a dana 44 just so people on the internet wouldn't make fun of my dana 35.

OP has a 4 cyl. I've wheeled my 4 cyl 2.4L on open diffs with 31s for a long time before totaling it, did fine. I also knew what i had back there so i wheeled with that in mind.

Yeah, I've got the 2.4- was being cheap when I bought it (new) and have regretted it. Motor isn't bad for a 4 cyl... just no aftermarket parts. Have an SRT4 engine going to work and do some customs. I've seen the motor push over 1000 HP. Nuts. I am not shooting for anything like that. I would be happy with 300. Going to get another CJ for a serious trail rig. Mine is more of a grocery getter. I really only drive it to work and play around with it every now and then.

I also ran a d35 successfully. It was in a 2001 xj. I added a Spartan locker, chromo shafts and a ruffstuff diff cover to try to reduce flexing. Right or wrong, I ran that on 33x10.50's for a while then went down to 31's. Had no issues. Same set up is still in the xj with the current owner.

The Spartan was an easy install and worked flawlessly on the trail and on the street. People will say that an auto locker will mess up your street handling, but I found it to just be a matter of not accelerating around corners.

Good luck with your build.

John

Butt hurt a little? Jesus... No one made "Childish Remarks" to your post. It's funny, because you only want to read post from mature individuals, but you're the only one making immature comments.. throwing out insults, internet porn, and talking about happy socks.. It was just stated that the Search function needs to be used more, it's actually a very useful tool.

Take a chill pill bro.

Leave him alone.....poor little guy can't take some reasonable suggestions like using the search function.....he'll learn eventually how annoying it can get when all the new posts on the site are all about upgrading a dana 35 and how can i run 35" tires......if he lasts that long around here....now leave me alone I need to get back to looking for internet porn

I search forum all the time. I use every combination of keywords I can think of and most of the time I get sent on a goose chase through over 1000 threads most of which do not even relate to what I'm looking for. The search bar rarely yields what I am looking for.
So if we can not find what we are looking for how do we ask? A new thread?

I believe that I have an auto locker on my 2000 TJ. I haven't gotten To wheel much because my head cracked. It seems to be holding up ok. I know the PO had damaged the ring gear so had to rebuild the diff. That's when the locker was installed. I am afraid of it breaking but I don't let it inhibit my driving.
Most of my research found that it's the shafts that break (not the c-clip) you can build a little more strength into the axle by upgrading the shafts to a stronger alloy metal.
I had a 4banger '89 wrangler. I would do burnouts and try to do doughnut on the pavement and never had any issues with the 35c. It's all about your budget and risk. A dana 44 or and 8.8 can get very costly before it completed. Granted to reward is worth the cost but not everyone had 2-3k to build a solid, strong axle.
Keep in mind too that if the axles shafts are stronger that the stress will be transcended to someplace else (probably the ring/pinion) there will always be some weak link.
Live happy :)
You can PM me anytime of you're having trouble finding a thread. Maybe I can help. Extra set of eyes never hurt.

Took 5 seconds... I just searched "Locking the Dana 35" and these were my results:

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/rear-locker-2197225/

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/budget-attempt-making-d35-last-1785649/

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/dana-35-lockers-1760802/

If I have trouble after searching the forum directly, I usually go to Google with the same keywords and add "Jeepforum" to the end and I usually find what I'm looking for.

I would wager just about every TJ issue has been asked and answered here on these forums, so by your logic we should remove the posting function.
