Mods please don't move me!!

Well....here's the deal guys. I'm offered a 50-60% discount by all three of these tool manufacturers because I'm a student. Snap On is by far the most expensive at around $5428 (list ~$12,000) with Matco not too far behind at about $4665, and Cornwell being the most affordable at about $3147. All three of these quotes contain a very similar line up of tools and a very similar sized box. I was just hoping somebody here who is in the field would shed some light on which company they would go with, given the student discount the opportunity, and why.

Snap-on because it will never go anywere Ive been through Mac,Matco, and a few others that come to our shop and the snap-on guy is the only one that comes every week no matter what. Ive been told by fellow techs hes been in business for the last 20 years while everyone else has come and gone. In my opinion snap-on cant be beat. I also got the student discount and WOW i saved alot of money. Go woth snap-on you wont regret it and they hold their value the others really dont

i recently got the same offer because im a student and i got the snap on set which is by far the best choice in my opinion. there are some kids in my class that got matco and cornwell and my set was delivered much faster and the tools are much more effective and easier to work with. the toolbox snap on makes is much better as well. they come in better configurations for organizing the toolbox and later if you want to buy more tools than just the basic set snap on gives you the discount on more tools. the other companies only give you the discount on a limited amount of tools. i would say go for snap on but thats me

No, the kit I'm getting a quote for has a lot more tools and a much larger box as well as air tools.

I would go with the brand you think you would have the most access to. I went with Snap-on for a majority of my tools and now I only can get to the Matco truck. I've seen 1 Cornwell truck around my area... but not near my job.

My buddy's grandfather worked at a tool mill years ago and told us that cut a wrench open, and they are all the same on the inside. His mill made the wrenches for Matco, Mac and Cornwell...all on the same machine. They were sent off to different finishing plants afterward.

Back in my younger years I worked on a Porsche pit crew. This argument came up from time to time. Year after year,Snap-on came out on top with most of the top mechcanics. As long as you buy quality, the brand of tool isnt going to matter near as much as how well you take care of your tools once you work with them:thumbsup:

SNAP-ON!
mac tools arnt as good of quality as they use to be
matco cost the same as snapon with less quality
i dont like cornwell, everytool i have ever seen that was cornwell was broken

but really switch it up, there is no reason to buy $300 for snapon impact sockets, go to harbor freight and buy a set for $10 they are just as strong

#14 ·
My favorite is Mac. Not because of the price (Usually better than Snap-On). You have to take into account the actual dealer also. My shop gets the Matco, Cornwell, Snap-on and Mac trucks and I found I buy from the person who will not BS you on tools, and will try to earn your buisness.

All depends on who shows up every week and is willing to give you good service. We have a Snap-On man that is good for nothing. All he wants to do is sell you a toolbox. Our Matco man is great. There every week and gets what i ask him.Hell he will even ship it to my house if i ask him.I've had success with all of them.To me it boils down to who has the better customer service.

My dad bought a Snap-on set when he was probably 20, he's 45 now and he still has them, I remember a couple of years ago he told me to go get him a wrench, and I grabbed on out of the drawer, he threw it away, and told me don't grab the chinese wrenches, get a snap-on, or at least a craftsman, from then on I knew if my dad asked for a wrench, always grab the Snap-Ons. I haven't really bought any tools, but I did go through 3 craftsman torx bits on the windshield of my yj, then I got a snap on bit, and I was able to hook it up to the impact wrench and take out all of the bolt. I don't really have much experience with this, but I would say spend the extra money and go snap on, if you take care of them they will hold up for many years (my dads had his for 20 years he wipes them down everytime he uses them, and they still look new)

If that's your only choices the go with Strap On. Not that they are so measurably better but the distribution network is so much larger that getting replacements is easier.
But..
and feel free to flame if you're into cost over value

I like Craftsman
I've had some of my craftsman wrenches since I was a kid and when I snap a breaker bar because the 1/2 bar is to big so I use a 3/8 and a cheater pipe I walk into any sears in any state and get it replaced NO QUESTIONS.
The quality is only marginally less then Strap On but is still up to anything short of space shuttle repair.
Cost is MUCH less so you can get more for the same $$$$
And I've got a STrap On metric combo roll plus 3 different specialty socket sets so I do know by hands on the quality comparison.

OK Johnny Flame On!

Get the snap on with the discount, you won't have that chance again. Later on, when you are paying full price you can get cheaper brands if you have to. In my experience the snap on wrenches, sockets and rachets are all top quality. Can you build your own set? No one needs a snap on gasket scraper or needle nose pliers or lots of other tools that are cheaper in other brands and work just as well.

Yes, that's what's great about it. I can customize it however I want. The quote I posted is just what he recommended. What's even cooler is this rep isn't a truck driver, he is an actual sales rep and he's local, he lives probably a half of a mile away and my old man worked with his father for 40 years so he knows me.

They had the same deal when I was in school...I ended up with a Mac box, then I filled it with Cornwell and craftman tools, So far I've never had to have a cornwell tool replaced. Craftsmans ratches are a joke and should be used for nothing more then a paper weight.. I will not buy an overpriced snap on. I'll buy good tools, but I'm not gonna pay for a name on top of it.

I have been a ASE Master Technician for 25 years in that 25 years with exception of about 4 months I have always had a Snap On Dealer while Mac & Matco dealers came & went we went 3 years with no Mac Dealer! Sure Snap On Costs More But in my opinion it's worth it 95% of my tools are Snap On including the Boxes + I have Snap On Boxes at home, Think closely about becoming a Technician and be aware of how abusive it can be to your body & be aware of what chemicals/substances you are exposed to,I can tell you from experience! what started out to be a fun job is no fun at all anymore! Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & Back Troubles are what I am having trouble with,When you look for a job try to find one that doesn't pay flat rate I have taken a 50% pay cut do to this economy & very little work!

As a professional tech over most of my adult life this is what I've learned.

Things that must be Snap-on.

Wrenches, chrome sockets, universals (both impact and chrome), 1/4" drive ratchets, and air ratchets, drive bits (torx, allens ect...).

Everything else either Matco, or Mac.

All other air tools (die grinders, impacts, ect...) Ingersol Rand no doubt here, there are no substitutes, even Snap-on isn't up to par in my mind as a good ol' IR air tool. Matco's air tools are mfg by IR FYI.

Gear wrenches are awesome, not mfg by any of the above.

Makita drill and flashlights are top of the line.

Snap-on really small cordless driver, best 125$'s I spent last year.

Snap-on cordless impact, with out a doubt will take any rusted on lugnut off, even better then my 1000 ft lbs IR impact, have broken lugs with this thing.

Tool box's are just box's I would suggest getting what you can afford that is big enough to hold all of your tools, I had to buy a new box last year because I had no more room and the new one is already full, 5k$ for the new box too even though its a Matco, same size for Snap-on was like 8k$.

My box
