Sloppy Steering/after lift - '97 xj

So before i lifted my cherokee, my steering was nice and tight, After i lifted it, it feels a little sloppy, especially on the freeway.

It pulls one way, then when i correct it, it wants to pull the other (it is not violent, actually doesn't pull hard, but it is noticable).

I know that my ball joints and tie rod ends are fine, because it wasn't doing this until after lifting it. I had an alignment done at les schuab.

So my questions:

I have a rusty's lift on with a standard trac bar that seems pretty weak. I will be upgrading it with the IRO heavy duty. Can a weak trackbar with 33's cause sloppy steering?

Also, if i upgrade the steering itself to 1 ton steering or some other heavy duty steering setup, Will that help?

Thanks for any responses/help.

By the way, i am mechanically inclined, so using proper words like drag link, tie rods, adjuster sleeve, etc. is good.

Wider, more aggressive tires have a greater tendency to follow irregularities in the pavement. Try and find a stretch of brand new pavement and see if you have the same symptoms.

Make sure your alignement is correct for a lifted vehicle, you want to have a total Toe-In of about 0* to +0.25*.

it could be your pinean angle. after i put my rc 6.5in lift on my steering was very loose and sloppy. it turned out i gad to adjust the upper controll arms in a bit to correct the pinean angle. now it drives and stears very close to stock. i think the pinian on mine is now set at about six degrees down.

I'm pretty sure that the pinion angle is not the cause, I have control arm drop brackets with adjustable lower control arms, that are set to stock length. I will double check though to make sure.

And a new steering stabilizer is a good idea, saying i still have the stock one on.

I think i'll get it aligned again too, this time somewhere else though, because les schwab did a pretty half *** job of it last time. They didn't even adjust my steering wheel straight, i took it to them and it was at a 3 oclock position and when i got it back it was at a 10 oclock position.....

i have the drop brackets too. i ended up having the bottoms set at about 16in and the uppers set at 14.5in. thats with 6.5in of lift. i think my uppers are actually shorter than stock now ha. i could be wrong tho. i didnt think that it efected my steering that much, but when i corected the pinian angle it made it drive like a dif jeep.

yes i believe so. i would go look at mine but im far from it now, i will check it out tomorow to be sure.

Stop going to Les Schwab for front end work. Those retards can only set the alignment to what the computer screen tells them. The computer doesn't have any settings for lifted vehicles.

Find an independent alignment and suspension shop that knows how to work on 4x4 vehicles and has technicians with gray hair. The one near me does alignments on everything, including dump trucks and 18 wheelers. They always get it perfect on the first try.

CJ7-Tim is absolutely right... the grey haired ones know their sh**, we have a guy that does all of our rigs from my sisters Jetta, my '71 chev, my dad's D-max, to all of our Dump Trucks and Flatbeds. And if they don't get it right they fix their mistakes. But that never happens :2thumbsup:

Yeah i just took it there 'cause they are right up the street and i was in a pinch (just lifted my jeep and needed to go to work), but i won't take it to them again.

Well cool... I guess i will get it realigned and get a new steering stabilizer. Then new trackbar, because i don't want a tie rod style anymore.

Thanks guys...

check your caster to make sure that it is within specs. i think that it needs to be set to 7* positive for stock cherokee and like 5-6* for lifted vehicles. after i had 5" of lift and control arm drop brackets, i put my caster to 5.5*. before the lift, the steering wheel was loose and was kind of terrifying driving 55 towards oncoming traffic. so i got the CAD brackets and set the caster and now all is good... nice and tight:rofl:.
i used this site to set my own stuff.

i hope this helps you some.

like everyone said the alignment will help a little, but you went from stock to 33's and that is where most of the issues are probably from. You may need a steering box brace because it is very possible that the steering box is flexing on the "frame rail" get out of the jeep and have someone turn the wheel and watch the steering box, tie rod, etc and see if anything is flexing there, it can cause a sloppy steering issue etc.
