OK Im 5" 1' maybe 5" 2' on a good day and I sit right under the darn airbag in my 07 unlimited Jeep. Im so close to the wheel I cant even use the console as an arm rest. Kinda had this problem in my 93 Jeep but I didnt have an air bag to worry about and it wasnt quite as bad as it is now.

Anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this problem and get me 3 to 4 inches away from the airbag? I wish Jeep could install pedals that moved back and forth, but they dont!

PS not buying a Jeep because of this reason was not an option ;)

pedal extensions?

Look in the yellow pages for some place that modifies handicapped vans; they can do anything for interior ergonomics.

If you have something from your doctor stating why you need to disable the airbag, the dealership can do it for you. Haveing to sit close to the steering wheel because of your height is a valid reason in NC, not sure about Texas though.

I think pedal extensions are the best bet for you if you are the only driver - but even if you're not, the otehr person can simply move seat back, right?

Be careful down there with Ike barrelling toward you.

Ike :( Right now the projected path has Sugar Land right in the direct path :( The news this morning was telling us to expect 70mph sustained winds, gusts up to 110mph :( and I have 3 huge trees in my front yard :(.

My garage only has room for one of our JK's, which is going to be mine because we have gap insurance on the wife's, no gap on mine.

I say we need pictures of your cute little short self in your Jeep......Umm I mean of the storm!:D

My wife feels your pain as she is about 5'3" and has the same complaints. She too would never think of not having her Jeep though, well today anyway!;)

OK Im not a munchkin I promise, I just get my height from my short Italian grandmother. And as much as I would like to get a lift on my Jeep forget it. I would need a ladder to get up in the darn thing!

The pics are over a year ago the day after I bought my Jeep. I had just got a huge bonus from my job.

Thanks! I was just kidding! Nice Jeep, mine use to look like that!;)

Make sure you keep safe!

Have you considered installing hand-controls? They are used primarily for paraplegic people who cannot control the foot-pedels? Fairly easy to learn to use. An old friend who was in a wheel-chair had the system installed in all his vehicles except for his Toyota OffRoader (it was standard).

Easy fix: Grow a few more inches ;)!

I might be able to help. I'm 5'4", and I kind of had the same problem when I got my jeep. I like to sit far enough back so that I can straighten my arm while driving. To get this far meant that if affected me reaching the pedals comfortably. My first few weeks I searched and searched for some kind of foot extensions or something!!! But I couldn't find anything that wasn't elaborate, and eventually I simply adjusted to it.

That being said...try adjusting the seat all the way down, then adjust the steering wheel up or down to your liking. The final step is to position the seat back just out of your comfort range. Mind you I said comfort range, not out of your ability to reach the pedals. I think you might find in a week or so that it isn't so bad.

I hope this helps, if it doesn't, please let us know if you find anything that does. I would be very interested.

I am a munchkin...

First, I am Dave386's WIFE, this is not him...

I am 4' 11", and I drive a TJ with a 3" lift... no issues. I have ordered pedal extensions for our newest addition to the Jeep club (we also have a highly modified '95 YJ). I just got an '81 CJ 8 Scrambler, and it's easily got 9" of lift under it between the lift, the Rubicon Express springs (spring over rear/standard front), and the 35" tires.

Even "munchkins" love their JEEPS!

Where did you order your pedal extensions from? Did you get them in yet, and have you used them? Wanna make sure they are good to go before I buy some!
Thanks for the tip!

As a fellow vertically-challenged person I understand your pain. I am 5'4 and have always loved driving my Jeeps even though they weren't designed with us "smaller" folk in mind. Right now I have extensions called PedalMates (www.creativecontrolsinc.com) on my '08 and they work great. They're not the sharpest looking things you'll ever see but they are very sturdy and very comfortable.

Before I bought these, I tried a pair from www.pedalextenders.com that did not fit properly on the pedals. Their site lists Jeeps as one of the vehicles you can buy for, but when I tried to install them (even with help from their nice customer service dept.) they would not secure properly because of the graduated plastic on the back of the Jeep's pedal.

I'm really the only person who drives the Jeep (my husband gets permission once in a awhile) so I don't have to worry about continually putting them on the then taking them off. That could probably get annoying. But it is great to be able to drive and not feel like I'm hugging my steering wheel.

Hope this helps.

So allegedly Jeeps aren't made for short people, and they're not made for tall people. How do these things keep selling? ;)

I'm at 5'5" and I'm closer to the wheel than I'd like, but it's not terrible. Wearing Dr Martens help (1" soled) and give me the best comfort. The seat is lowered all the way and slightly reclined. The only pedal that ends up being a problem is the clutch when wearing thin soled shoes. Perhaps you can keep a pair of Jeep shoes/boots in the Jeep. ;)

Putting the top up and down alone is not a problem at all, esp after installing side steps.

This just goes to show that each of us has our 'comfort zone' for sitting while driving. I'm 5'6" and my seat isn't anywhere near the forward most position (and I'm a short legged fellow). My seatback isn't leaning back but isn't leaning towards the wheel either. Arms rest on the window sill and the console lid or hand on the shifter. I find this vehicle to fit my driving size just fine, even though physically I'm a short cat.

Fixed that for you.

I'm 5'2" and while its not as comfortable as I'd like, I guess I just got used to driving without my heels hitting the floor! Have had my '07 for 2 years. I think the JK is better for short people than the TJ (I always felt too low), but my old YJ was great I think because of less of a dashboard in the way.

Tho tough to really quantify accurately, here's how mine is adjusted.
Fwd-back adjustment: Front of the seat is in line with the shifter in park(if you have an auto). I can reach the pedal semi-comfortable. As someone stated, I do adjust depending on if I'm wearing sandals I have to sit a bit closer, platforms with heels are definitely more comfortable as now my heel can rest!
Seat angle: fwd edge of my headrest is in line with the seatbelt height adjustment
Seat height: high enough so I can start to see the hood at the little black windshield bumper things
Steering wheel: mostly all the way down, top is just under my view of the bumpers

I can't imagine going so far as to put extension pedals on but I'm sure it'd be more comfortable.

Good luck!

Hey Wrangler Joe. I did purchase all three and I ordered them through www.creativecontrolsinc.com. The accelerator and brake set was $150 and the clutch extender was $105. You can adjust the pedals to fit your liking when you install them.
The distance to the pedals probably would not seem so severe if I drove an automatic. When you have one foot resting on the floor at all times as you do in an auto, you still have something to provide a little balance. But when you need to push both your feet forward on a clutch and brake at the same time, you're almost sitting parallel with the floor, pressing yourself against the back of the seat. Can be very awkward when things are out of reach.
