Yes, the rubber fitting inside the skid keeps it snug and is a damper between the metal skid and the medal tank (15 gallon is metal, 20 gallon is plastic).

I would recommend putting something in there such as Dynamat or a similiar product.

it always floors me that the seller rapes the buyer with EXCESSIVE shipping fees... i mean really; $12 for shipping a piece of neoprene???

i know this may sound odd, but check your local fabric store they sell the stuff also.

 

asked this same question last week, someone recommended Oatey 40mil PVC shower pan liner from the Home Depot. dunno, what you found should work also.

Yeah I thought it was perfect too.. especially with the "material intended for use where resistance to petroleum based lubricants and exposure to the elements is required".

In fact.. it would be on it's way to me if it wasn't $12 for shipping! I'll probably break down and buy it though... maybe drop by the home depot on the way home to check out that shower pan liner.

 

The PO on mine made 3"diameter silicon pads anywhere the tank would touch the skid....that held up nicely. I did cut them off and made new ones during my rebuild.

 

The factory buffer between the tank and skid are hard plastic. Anything made of neoprene or sponge rubber will retain moisture and rust your tank and or skid plate.

 

I suppose I'm glad I didn't get the rubber matting off ebay then. Keith, do you know where I can pick up that hard plastic piece?

 

Not offhand, but I have seen them available on the web somewhere and was surprised they had them.

 

Bump on this topic? Has anyone recently put this buffer in between their fuel tank and skid plate? If so, may I ask what exactly you used, and where you purchased it?

I think that the only reason those mats are there is to prevent the skid from rubbing a hole in the plastic tank.

 

I used the factory liner from a 20 gal. poly tank. The material is a little thicker, and similar in consistency, than an inner-tube. i.e. for a tractor tire. If you can find a used inner-tube and cut it to the proper dimensions I think it would work rather well. JMHO

 

I used a $5 generic floor mat and cut to fit plus a piece of it for under the tank strap

 

I went to Home Depot and bought 2.5 ft. @ $6/foot of the Oatley 40mm shower pan liner. Feels like it will work great.

When I replaced my tank I just bed linered both the tank and the skid. Made sure to get a good thick coat on the inside of the skid and bottom of the tank. Has held up well.
