hey there, after i long process i have relized my computer in my 2000 cherokee needs replaced...... no problem.... but I need to know what all years will work in mine and if the letters after the part # mean anything. I know that I have to get the same part # ( P56041) but are the last few digits important. When I called a junk yard today he asked what letters where after the part # that this was very important, but the one I tried in it to trouble shoot the problem was from a 2001 with the same part # but different letters. ( mine is AF the other was AD ) I also seen on line that the years 1996 to 2000 are the same..... Is this true?

Basicly what ecm/ecu will work in my 2000 XJ

The ECU engine computer part numbers must match exactly, the letters can be ignored.

Now the part # line on the ecu is P56041 then a large space then mine is 635AF, the one I tried is P56041 space 801AD so do you mean just the P56041 or all of it except the letters? Thanks

P56041 635 and P56041 801 are the computer part numbers. ALL 8 numbers must match. Any letters such as AC, AD, AE, or AF can be ignored.

Thanks again...... odd thing is that when I tried the p56041 801 in my jeep that had the p56041 635 it worked....might of been some lucky fluke.

im curious now bc i think i fried my ecu the other day and im looking into getting a junkyard one but i dont want to waste my money without knowing the actual answer since a diff number worked for you. i have a 93 with a 4.0

The one that worked for me was almost the same. I found one at a local junk yard that had the exact same part #, letters and all, put it right in and it runs great for now...... but my problem always seamed to hide for a drive or two after disconecting the battery, so only time will tell. I dont know much about grands but I would think if nothing major changed between 93-98 any one from another 4.0 would work. good luck!
