Removing Crank Pulley

I have my new engine on a stand and I need to remove the crank pulley because I want to give the block a nice coat of paint. All you have to do is take the bolt out and use a harmonic balancer puller to take the pulley off, correct? Since the engine is out of the jeep, whats the best way to immobilize the flywheel/crank so I can get the bolt out? When I reinstall the pulley, I just need to make sure I have the notch lined up with the correct place on the timing cover correct?

If you have an air compressor and gun easy no problem. If you have a helper you could jam the pressure plates bolts on the flywheel with a pry bar or get something like a good sized screwdriver and use the teeth on the ring gear.

I have both an electric impact and a compressor so that's no big deal. Just wanted to make sure there wasnt any little tricks about removing and installing it

Unless of course, you go by the sage advice of a recent post from Old4X in this thread: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/4-0-belt-issues-1421397/ , and get a bolt with matching thread pitch and size but about 1/2 to 3/4" longer. That will allow enough thread engagement to safely start the pulley back on, then you can either add spacing washers under the head, or then switch to the stock pulley bolt.

Got the pulley off in like 5 min. No big deal. Now Ive just got to clean the pain off the old timing cover to prep for the new coat.

AMC 360 Crank Pulley

I thought the Pulley was held on by the 4 bolts to the Harmonic Balancer (AMC 360). If so, then why can I not get it off, is it probably just corroded to the damper? Can I just remove the pulley with the damper and separate them then? (let me guess . . . that is how it is suppose to come off, huh?)

My 258 V-belt one does, the pulley is bolted onto the balancer.

I did read somewhere that the harmonic balancer can come loose and slip. My 4.2 seems to have done something as the timing marks are not where they should be. When I time it between 12-13 it will almost not run, I have to replace mine.:( Holding off until after hunting season, then I am going to pull motor, trans and drop suspension for complete rework. Have about 12k budget in mind.

* New 4" lift leaf spring kit $500 :eek: (or coil over conversion) $2K,
* wheels & tires $1.5K
* motor rework, new clutch rework/replace Transmission $8k.

Currently has the 5 speed Peugeot BA 10/5 5 speed manual, so far I have not had any issues with it but I hear stories and parts are not easy to find for it. Thought about upgrade to the AX15 5-speed, or just scrap motor and trans and drop in a Jasper diesel and Transmission combo! That would push this little YJ anywhere I wanna go and my budget to a bank loan. :D
