Removing a Snorkel?

What if I decided I want to remove my snorkel. What could I potentially use to cover up the big gaping hole in the body of my jeep? I know this seems stupid, but i'm just curious.

I removed mine and installed PSC flat fenders which replaces the panel with the hole in it. I didn't want to put a hole in my new flat fenders so I took the snorkle off.

I just removed mine today and went to Advance Auto and bought those stupid diamond plate mud flaps and cut it to the correct size to cover up the hole. Everything looks good after the install and I plan to paint it tomorrow.

Now I am begone of that damned snorkle, yeah!

I got tired of buying new plastic heads for it because of hitting trees when wheeling.

I was thinking the rocklight option as Ive seen it and its way cool....if thats not an option, you can get those round plastic covers that go in the ceiling over a light fixture box, or fan...

My wife came over and looked at what I was watching, she couldn't believe that and wanted to know why in the heck he would do that. She promptly decided he is a moron for doing it. I tried to defend it but you know what, I sorta agree. I would rather go through a muddy patch then a water hole, no matter how many times I was able to make it through both.

I really don't have an answer, on the why.... But I'm guessing because he can. I'm kinda amased that all the rest of vehicle was able to make it under water like that. (electrical).

The reason I took it off or should I say reasons; 1. it brings every darn tree into the cab an onto my wife (as she has the controlling factor for money, I have to keep her satisfied when it comes to Heep mods). 2. It is really a piece of crap. I have purchased two new plastic grates and those broke the first couple of times I have taken it out. I then built a custom metal grate and that lasted about 6 months but I suppose when you are hitting most every tree in the forest, you can only take so much abuse. 3. It really draws too much attention. I am in Jeeps for the fun, wheeling and friends, not for the attention the extra useless bling brings while climbing the speed bumps at the mall.

Hope that helps to explain it.

This is bull. Chrome doesn't get you home. Snorkels do. If you do one deep water crossing, the snorkel will pay for itself. I have a snorkel and I put it to good use all of the time. If you live out West in the desert and only rock crawl, then it isn't useful. I don't have one bit of chrome on my jeep and I don't appreciate people comparing a snorkel to chrome.

Other than install a snorkel what have you done to prepare your Jeep for deep water crossings?

Except for those who require them. The stock air box intake is in a horrible position. Makes it really easy to suck in water. I've hydrolocked before because of that. I have a snorkel becuase I dont want to do it again. I can't say it is used often, but when I need to have it I'm glad its there.

Did you do anything to prepare your Jeep for deep water?

Yes. All vent tubes are extented and the elecgtrical connections are about as waterproof as they are gonna get. I make sure to change the fluids should I have come across a water crossing.

I also should add that the Jeep is not a boat. I don't suggest anyone go out and drown their Jeep. The snorkel is your intake only and just because its higher dosen't mean its full proof, but it sure helps. There are lots of other things to concern yourself with. I don't go looking to drive down or through a lake or anything like that. However, sometimes when you deal with a trail that crosses a creek especially when its swollen and the entrance to cross it is steep you can easily stick the OEM intake underwater.
