Power Steering Pump rebuild?

I noticed that one can purchase a power steering seal-kit for $30. Mine is leaking and I was wondering if anyone has rebuilt theirs? The pump itself is only $ 60 but there is a $ 50 core charge and the cost of shipping it back. It seems like much less transactions/money if it is just taken apart and refurbished. I realize a special puller is needed as my 3-arm puller will bend the flimsy PS pulley. Has anyone taken theirs completely apart?

Depends where it is leaking. My "old" '93 4.0 was leaking between the reservoir and pump. There is an O ring there and it just went south. Pulled it apart, replaced O ring, no more leaks. Never tore the pump assembly apart. Even though I have the puller kit to remover/install the pullies, just found it easier to replace the pump on some cars.

It is very hard to tell looking at my pump, where the leak is originating from. The whole thing seems oily. I think I will spray it down with brake cleaner and start looking for the leak with a new clean surface. Then if I cannot tell maybe just replace the reservoir seal and then take it from there.

I have a leak on mine that appears to be between the tank and the pump. I plan to take mine apart to replace the seal and to go ahead and replace both hoses while I am in there and have the system empty. Any special tools or bits required to get the pump and tank apart?

I just did mine power steering pump 3 months ago. I got it from advanceautoparts
It was like$70 and $75 for core and they give lifetime warranty. So basically it's $40 more than repair kit.
Just don't forget to get a power steering pulley puller (if you will reuse old one )and use bolt/nut gizmo (it comes with new pulley) to set the pulley back on. It should never be hammered on.
And one more thing about Advance Auto. Print the item you want to get from web page first as they tend to have higher prices at the store. They will price match to their website.
BTW, new pump comes with reservoir

It's been a while since did mine, but just slide the top and bottom clips off and the reservoir will separate from the pump.

I wouldn't bother with the rebuild. Just do like Ilya said and get a new one with with a lifetime warranty from Advance or AutoZone. They're cheap, but have a lifetime warranty and are easy to change. Just be prepared to go to the dealer and get a new pulley. They are a real PITA to get off the old pump. Almost impossible. I put a puller on mine and all it did was bend it outward and it still didn't come off.:brickwall

BIG TIME DITO!!!!!

This is a PITA to do. Easy to understand, easy to master. But the pully is a massive be-yatch. I would go so far as to recommend buying a NEW pully and installing that rather than removing the old. 20ish from the $tealer.

DO THIS ONCE AND ONCE ONLY.

Thanks I appreciate everyone’s advise. Not sure what I’ll do yet but something may happen if it’s warm out this weekend.
