Part time light

I can't seem to perform a search of the forum and I know this has been addressed many times but here it goes again:

My "part time" light mostly stays on no matter what. The Jeep does shift into and out of 4 wheel mode completely every time.

Sometimes the light will blink off and then back on when shifting out of 4 wheel high. Sometimes it blinks off then back on when shifting into 4 wheel high. Mostly though it just stays on.

Any ideas or links to previous threads?

Fill in your Profile info and always include your Cherokee details in a posting. The correct answer will vary depending on the model year or optional equipment, engine, Tcase, transmission.

switch is located above front shaft on transfer case. I have opposite problem, my light is always off. I was told that there are 2 wires going to swith. Disconnect connector and see if light is off, then connect jumper wire to see if it is off. Let me know. Good luck. Switch is 10 doll.

OK, I went out and took a look for the switch or wires to the switch...no luck! There is nothing above the front shaft other than shift linkage.

Only other things connected are the four vac line connector and what looks like a thick cable just above the four vac lines. Is that the switch? It's on the rear portion of the TC.

All the other postings are incorrect for your model year.

On the early 1980's Cherokees they ran a vacuum hose from the Tcase up to a vacuum switch for the 4x4 light. It is on the passengers fender well just in front of the heater blower or maybe below the coolant tank.

On the late 1980's-early 1990's Cherokee, they simplified it and put a switch on the axle at the vacuum disconnect.

Check that your Vacuum hoses and switch wires are not damaged and that they are all hooked up.

Yep. Found my switch just like described in the post above. It is on the back side of the fender well on the passenger side below the coolant tank.

I did manage to get it working again. It has a blue "cap" that is filled with RTV or something similar. If you dig that out, you find an adjustment under there. Simply placing my thumb over this cap, I could feel that the vac varied as I "adjusted this. Adjusted to where there is a good deal of vac, the part time light doesn't work at all. Adjusted to where I could feel a minimum (there is always some vac) vacuum, the part time light now works for me. Your results may vary!

In any case, I now know where to look for it and how to replace it in the near future.
