Hey Guys.

I have Jeep Liberty 2002 that has broken hood release cable. I need to open that darn hood.
How do I go about it?

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Wow, that's a tough one... Is it broke at the hood latch, or inside? I had one break inside on another car, I had to use pliers pull the cable to open the hood.

If at the hood latch? Man, that is going to be tough. Look up through the grill and locate the hood locking mechanism. It will be in the middle of the car, directly under the front of the hood, of course. Bend the end of an aluminum wire (or like a wire hangar) around to create a loop, then tie a knot so that the loop does not come loose. Slide the wire through the grill and get the loop around the hook of the hood locking mechanism. Pull the wire in the opposite direction of the hook while depressing the hood. This will give the hook some slack and make it easier to pull open.

There are other ways, but some are car and model specific.

There is no way to jack it up, and reach up there and pull it manually, because there is no room to get our arm up there. You have to do it from the front.

Some have done this with Cherokees, or removed the headlights to get to the latch mechanism.

One liberty owner said: "If you can see where the cable connects to the release arm you can force the arm over with a screwdriver and release it ."

Hey Dreamer111,
I'm not sure based on your post if the cable is actually broken or that when you try to use the release handle it just doesn't work. Last year I had a problem with my release handle not doing anything. When I removed the release handle from the Jeep floor (think it was 3 screws), nothing was actually broken but the cable had stretched (age, heat??) and wasn't being pulled enough to release the hood latch. As you pull the handle the cable gets stretched over a part of the plastic, so I ended up just wrapping the plastic part with tape so it would cause more of the cable to be pulled when using the handle. The end of the cable has a small cylinder welded to it that goes in a specific slot, so its not like you can just cut the cable shorter and reattach it. Hence the tape.
I hope that make senses.
I think you cannot buy the cable separate, the dealership mentioned that the whole latch assembly is ordered in one piece (never confirmed). So it might be expensive if the cable is actually broken.
Hope this helps.

For the sake of the thread, here is a picture of the hood latch mechanism on a 2005 Jeep Liberty. It is very difficult to manipulate without breaking some plastic. There is a plastic “guard” preventing direct access to the mechanism. Punching out that guard will give access to use a screwdriver to actuate the latch. ...and I’m not sure how to add a picture yet. :(
