Think there MIGHT be a liability aspect with this product?

Read the fine print, don't sue is when you get a bird-strike to the face while going down the highway at 65 mph

:rtft:

I believe the glass is DOT compliant, but they don't recommend opening it until off road.

Would be useful for anyone with a roof rack or something that makes folding the window a pain...

Hmmmm......$1K so you can see  Folks, its glass, you can already see through it. :p

Spend 1K on a cage and fold the flippin' windshield down if YOU HAVE TO CATCH CRAP IN YOUR FACE.

IMHO.

.... That was good. But your right.. They are smoking the @#$% again if they think I'd pay them $1k for a non-street-legal version of something I can already do with just removing a few bolts.

I looked all over their site and it looks like it's something like Lexan safety glass from what I can tell. Not DOT legal windshield glass. I'm not sure of the material but they never say DOT approved and they continually say "for off-road use only..." And the safety glass is alot cheaper than DOT glass.

However, even if they did use DOT glass, where the hell do they get $2k for the cost?!? The actuators are the most expensive part and they aren't that much...

I'm not saying I want one of these or that I think they even serve much purpose, but think back the VW microbuses. One of the ultra-cool options you could get from the factory were Safari Windows -- a split front windshield where each window would flip-up. You didn't drive around with windows wide open, but partly cracked to let air in. If you were parked you might open them all the way to keep from roasting in there. I think that might be the the thought process that went into this abomination. It might be handy for rolling photography I supposed. Adding actuators is a bit extreme. The whole thing doesn't look like a safe idea to me.

Most lights you get say for offroad use only... But you're still allowed to have them on the street right?
Lights depend completely on the area you live in. In Texas for example, I can run mine but they are lower power than most (55W) and under the max height requirements (If I remember right, 54.5"). In some states, you can't even have un-shielded lights on your vehicle (I.E. they must have a solid cover on them when on the street) some other states let you run what ever you want. It's a local rule on additional aftermarket lights.

if it were DOT glass i think it'd be heavier... and wouldn't it flap down?

I typically use the windsheild to sheild me from stuff... not for extra mud-in-facery.

also, i think it would screw with the aerodynamics :D

btw, in PA you can have uncovered foglights, but they can't be on unless weather is appropriate (i.e. foggy) and lights can't be any higher than 4' off the ground... but i can't find where it says it would be ok if they were covered and/or have a underhood lockout switch.

LIKE CALIFORNIA.... Man, we have some of the dumbest laws and regulations around :rtft:

If the glass is not DOT widshield glass I would not want it on my vehicle.

Think about the glass shards when it would break. By contrast DOT windshield glass will not shard. In fact to remove windshield glass after an accident you use a saw to cut through it. DOT side winds glass will break but breaks into small chunks.

This is a completely horrible idea. Truly awful.

Get a cage, fold down the windshield. Done. for $350 or so you get better protection than stock plus that ability, or for $1000 you get worse protection than stock and less clear of a view because you still have the windshield frame in your view.

Plus, have you ever driven on the road with the winshield down? Fastest I went was around 40 on pavement, 25 on a dirt road and damn... I missed the windshield... dust in your mouth, eyes, ears, everything. Can't even imagine how it would be with the sand in Oman...
