Hello! I need some help to make sure I'm not getting screwed by the dealer on repairs. I'll run through the scenario as short as I can...

Our 2012 Jeep Wrangler has the Check Engine light come on. We notice it's got a rough idle at start up and when reversing it shutters pretty bad. Take it to AutoZone and the code reads Misfire Cylinder 6.

First Trip to Dealer: They tell us it's the spark plugs and ignition coils so we have all of them replaced for $1,300. We get it back and Check Engine light comes on that same day.

Second Trip to Dealer: They tell us that the fuel injector is leaking on the cylinder and it needs replaced but they are cutting us a deal and only charging $500 to do it. Shouldn't they have noticed it leaking the first time? We get it back and again Check Engine light comes on that same day.

Third Trip to Dealer: Jeep has been there since Saturday. I just got off the phone with them because they haven't given an update and they tell me that they can't figure out what's wrong with the Jeep.

Should I take it to a different shop ( there's a local place that is highly regarded for working on off road / overlanding vehicles ) and let them work on it? Is there anything specific I should be asking the dealer to do or look at? Just bought a house and can't afford to keep giving them money.

I had a misfire on my 2010 @ 106k and the local shop moved the coils around as well as the spark plug and discovered the distributer was bad. So we changed the distributer and one coil for good measure. Spark plug was fine. No issue since then.

I wouldn’t just leave the car there without any work being done. Thats just a waste of time for you. You should be there demanding warranty on the work you already payed for. Pay them no more!!!! Get the car, drive it until you get the engine code, go to autozone, find out what code it is, take it to the dealer and say See, my car was not fixed and have them do their job better. Tell them their techs are just throwing parts around and that jeeps dont have fancy mercedes engines and that even your uncle joe could have changed the coils, plugs, and distributer.

2010 JK distributor? And, can a single coil be changed in the 2010 JK 3-coil pack?

On a 12, I would point them to this TSB http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_0900214b.pdf and if the head hasn't been replaced, push for that. The left head is known to have an issue and if it hasn't been replaced yet, that's what I would be pushing for AND if that it, I would be pushing hard for a refund from the misdiagnosis.

They should know this, it's not a secret. Left head, check engine light and a misfire on either cylinder 2,4 or 6.

You have a 10 year, 150,000 mile extended warranty on that head. Me thinks they are taking your wallet for a ride.
@JeepCares Can you help him? This sounds fishy.

Thank you for the reply!

Hopefully JeepCares can help me out but I'll def be giving the dealer a call and referencing your post.

Hi bhayes423,

Sorry to hear of the trouble you are experiencing with your Wrangler! I would be more than happy to have a case escalated on your behalf. This will allow us to formally document your concerns, as well as connect you with a case specialist who can work alongside your dealer to find a potential solution. Please follow up with me via PM if this would be of interest.

@JeepCares

We would love to have you help us in any way you can. Just let me know what I need to do!

We've also had another issue with this dealer and repairs before. The e-brake light will not turn off and we've had it in a couple times to have it fixed. They've claimed to have fixed it on 2-3 occasions only for it to come back on every time and the last response was they couldn't figure out why and that we didn't need to worry about the light being on. I know it's not much but still...

WHAT?

I don't suppose you have another dealer in your area? This dealer seems clearly incompetent.

The dealer has a lot of options when their hacks, I mean mechanics are stuck. They can open a STAR case with corporate and get engineering assistance. Telling a customer to live with a warning light is pure laziness on the dealer.

Your post count might be too low to IM JeepCares. Somehow we will work it out if you can't.

Alright. After 8 days of waiting and reaching out they decided to call us back this morning...

Apparently there is a coolant leak and that is what is causing the issue. They can't find where it's coming from and said they need to take the engine apart to locate it. They are only going to charge us $1,900 because we are "good customers".

JeepCares hasn't responded to my PM so I'm a little lost on what to do. We told them we want to get a second opinion but we have to pay ANOTHER diagnostic fee to get the Jeep back.

Lenoir City Jeep is a joke.

If you have a case number, call customer cares and give them the case number.

So, after charging you a couple Grand on repairs that were unnecessary, they want close to another 2 grand to fix an unknown coolant leak? This dealership is run by a bunch of crooks.
@JeepCares why are you not responding to him?

They finally agreed to not charge a diagnostic fee so we picked our Jeep up and returned the loaner. This was after I called Jeep corporate and they reached out to the dealer.

Upon picking it up they told us that right now there is a very minimal coolant leak and head gasket leak. They said that if they pressurized the lines for 15 hours straight it would maybe produce enough to fill a bottle cap... They said that it could be a month or several months down the road but the issue will worsen and will result in several thousand in repairs.

They actually recommended us trading it in while the codes have been wiped if we don't want to go the route of dumping more money in the Jeep. We may trade it in for a 4 door Wrangler at another dealer but it seems shady to do that.

Sadly, my misfire resulted in my right head being replaced. Best of luck.
