I installed one in an '04 Wrangler. The shelf fits snugly between the roll-bars that are over the doors. The shelf will not fit between the roll bars if the foam padding & nylon covers (on the bars) are in place. It looks like the shelf would be a perfect fit between the roll bars if the bars were just bare metal with no padding.
I removed the foam from under the nylon covers and got the shelf to fit. The shelf uses ring-shaped clamps at either end that go around the roll-bars, and a small two-piece clamp that secures the center of the shelf to the footman loop on the windshield. The ring clamps had to be opened up some (re-bent) to get around the still-nylon-covered roll bars.
Once installed, it is a very nice shelf. It is made of heavy guage steel and is rock-solid. It is sturdy enough to be used as a hand hold. The leading edge is protected by a strip of padding so you dont cut your hand on the metal. The shelf is painted a textured black and it has two small access doors cut into it, held on by allen-head bolts, that you must remove to get to the clamps that hold the soft top onto the windshield. You will need to keep an allen wrench in your glovebox for this.
All in all, it is a very nice shelf. I am happy I installed it and I keep lots of little stuff up there all the time. My only beef is I wish the shelf was cut shorter (and the ring clamps made bigger) to fit between the padded roll bars
