Ha. Just saw that mahindra decided to bring the remade cj7s (i thought they were cj5's but the door cutout is a 7) they make in india over to the states as a side by side UTV as they won't pass american safety standards.

https://www.roxoroffroad.com/

Wonder if you could take one of these change out the grill, windshield and roll bar, put aftermarket bumpers and tire carrier on. Would you have a cj7 that could "kinda" pass as an on road vehicle.

Although looking at the specs the thing has a 65hp turbodiesel (which i like) but only tops out at 45mph.

Wonder what kind of axles and trasfer case/transmission it uses?

Hood, fenders and cowl are all early CJ-5 dimensions and it is rumored that you can change over to the early CJ-5 fold down windshield. Axles are approx to a dana 44 front and 44 rear with both offset and a t-90 and dana 18 ish trans and tcase. Going to have to look up the documents from when kaiser licensed to mahindra the ability to build with the early jeep plans to find out if FCA has any merit in their law suit. Only part that is CJ-7ish is the squared off door openings. All of the other dimensions match ish the early CJ-5.

The dimensions are different, U.S. CJ body parts won't fit. The tub is the same width as a U.S. CJ-5/7 tub, but the back end of the hood is narrower because there's a step-in at the side of the cowl. And a U.S. CJ grille won't fit because the Mahindra hood is wider in the front. This photo of a Mahindra Thar (the fully-equipped vehicle in India that the Roxor is derived from). Notice the headlights don't intrude on the outer grille slots like they do on a U.S. CJ.

The wheelbase is actually a bit longer than a CJ-7, it's about 96".

I've spent a lot of time in India (in fact I'm in Rajasthan as I write this), and I've measured the Thar.

Yep, now that you look at it, it is way more in line with a 5 than a 7. Plus it has a narrow Width of the axle which you would find in a 5 or pre 82 cj7.

I do remember when i was in india about 9 years ago seeing all these cj5 look alikes running around. As you said, it looks like they just took the 5 and cut out the doorway.

I do question if those are real dana axles though. I have a hard time believing they are using quality axles (or trans/transfer cases) in those, and not some indian knock off.

The thar looks at though is has an IFS in the front, where the roxor looks like a one piece front axle.

you sure its the same?

Anyhow, it looks to cost 15K for a non-street worthy cj knockoff. Unless you could fudge it into cj using an old title, don't see how it would be worth it.

Less than most SXS's and with more and more areas licensing SXS's for local and country/county street use (no state Hwy use) I don't see an issue for most to be able run it up and down the road.

Ok.

So Jscherb do you know what kind of drivetrain is really in it? Are those dana knockoffs or the real deal?
I don't know for sure, I haven't focused too much on the mechanicals, I've been more interested in the body shell. I hear the axles are similar to Dana 44's but not identical and most parts do not interchange, but I don't know if that info is 100% accurate.

The reason I'm mostly interested in the body shell is because I've been thinking about bringing a Mahindra Savari body shell over from India and dropping it on a Wrangler Unlimited chassis. The Savari is a long-wheelbase 4-door that would make a great overlander/camper...

I was at the local motorcycle dealer yesterday, getting my Triumph inspected.
They sell Roxor's there, since early spring...
I talked to the owner of the shop (a relative, of sorts) and asked if there's lots of interest.
He says sure, tons of people looking, it's a good draw.
How many are buying?, I asked.
No one is buying, he tells me. And he regularly talks with another cycle shop dealer in VT...same story except he's sold one in 5 months!

I may not have all the details but here goes whatever i could gather.

Roxor: Based on Thar m2dicr. There are 2 types of Thar from the beginning itself, crde with IFS & m2dicr with SFA.

Engine: Based on either an International Harvester or Peugeot design. Highly evolved from a 60-70s design if IH based and that would be mdi3200TC which came from B575 which in turn got links to IH B275.

Trans: Essentially BA10/5 internals in cast iron housing called NGT520. Proven Mahindra design.

Transfer case: Based on Dana Spicer 18 with single stick adapter. Essentially same unit but made by Mahindra.

Chassis: Boxed frame that started in Army issue MM550 and then offered to civvies starting from Mahindra Major in 2004 & then to Thar in 2010.

Axles: Dana 44 derived with some minor changes that evolved over the years into a solid system. Could be called M44. Made by Mahindra & highly abused in India.

There are no knockoff parts in Roxor. All parts started out as direct imports from Toledo in the 40s but later indigenized & altered under contractual agreements with Willys & its successors. All parts that go into a Thar or Roxor are Mahindra made. Thar is thus an altered product from the original licenses along with all parts that go into it, and Roxor being directly derived from the Thar. This parallel Jeep/jeep world always existed in India, unbeknownst to most Americans.

most the people that call trailer queens are mall crawlers themselves. No offense just saying what is true. I could drive my jeep anywhere and even at say 95mph on 37s. But why? Tires are rather expensive to wear out on paved highway. maybe its age but a DD jeep as your only ride. yea sure back in 1975 and back then it was a 47cj for me. was kinda hard getting around at the speed of smell. 4 flat head squirrels that needed some crake.

they been trying to bring these in under the wire, so to say. Most states they wont be able to be plated. I would almost bet i could though right here in this town. since we can drive atvs on the street here. Is it a good idea? until the scene of wreck sure......... see a lot them get killed here every year. As well in our Deserts there is always here every year a few side siders do something very stupid at speed. with thousands of miles of trails so yea you see it all.

I spent a year living in Nepal and witnessed first hand how Mahindras hold up. Simply put, they’re built for abuse. I’ve been in them going up and down switchback roads through the mountains. During the monsoon season these roads become slick rocky washouts. They go through multiple fast moving water crossings a day, etc. The thing is these aren’t wheeling trips to those people. To them it’s just a way to get supplies to and from their village, and since every village has only a handful of vehicles this trip is often made multiple times a day. Mahindra makes a good product.

I know this is a thread about the Roxor, but the Thar's IFS has been discussed, so here are a few photos I took underneath a Thar this afternoon in New Delhi. The Roxor's solid axle (and the Thar's solid axle, for Thar's that have it) looks as you would expect a solid axle to look.

The center section is fairly long.

I work for a dealer hear in Texas. we have 3 roxor. they are great handling and very good climbing and in the mud. they are very well made. roxor right now only has the diesel motor with a 5 speed. the will soon be releasing a gas based motor. they are tuned low and capped at 45mph for safety. how ever there is a few company's that will flash the ecm and raise that limit up, and they have tunes to bring the power out of this motor. there is a few ways to make this thing so you can get a plate on it, however i am not allowed to discuss that nor can i recommend that. they are also suppose to be releasing a lot of more parts and upgrades for it soon enough.
