Looks like I have the dreaded oil cooler leak

I noticed a rather good size pool of engine oil under my jeep. Its coming from the top of the bell housing and has soaked the transmission and leaking on the exhaust crossover pipe. From what I can see its coming from the oil cooler. I had my jeep in to change the front inner axle seals about 2 weeks ago and never noticed any leaks while it was on the hoist. I still have warranty so this should be hassle free.

Seeing the numerous people online that have the same issue is there a TSB out for this and has the oil cooler been updated? I have a 2014 and it only has 30k miles on it.

Hi D0T-C0M,
We're truly sorry that you are experiencing this. I found a STAR case that may apply to your concern. It is STAR Case #S1809000007. I suggest having your dealer look into this to determine if this applies to you. You may also send us a private message if you would like any extra assistance while your Jeep is at the dealer.

Hi Jeep Cares, Pardon my ignorance but what is a STAR case? Is that like a report before a TSB comes out? I'm from Canada will my dealer know what that STAR case number means? My jeep is at the dealer's but they said its winter tire season and they are jam packed with appointments and the best guarantee is they might be able to bring it in and quickly check what is has to order parts but might be next week before they can do the job. Bums me out because we just got about 12" of snow last week and another 12" forecasted for wed-thurs. All my buddies are going out this weekend. Would have loved to get it done quickly.

Hi D0T-C0M,
Yes, STAR cases usually come before TSBs. Being that you are located in Canada, I am unable to determine how your dealer goes about using STAR cases. It would be best to discuss this with your dealer. If you need any further assistance, we suggest contacting Jeep Canada Customer Care at 1-800-465-2001 for they will have the correct resources to assist you.

So I am curious what percentage of the failures are caused by:
-Overtightening oil filters
-O-Ring Failure
-Built out of spec and were eventually going to fail anyways.

I have a 2015 30,000miles that I wanted to pop off the valve covers. Verify all of the lifters are good. Should I think about replacing the oil cooler while I'm in there.

Nope.

Replacing that oil cooler requires way too much disassembly to do as a preventative measure and the replacement part is no different than the one it came with so it would be pointless to do.

It is the oil filter adapter that cracks. It's not an o ring failure or any of those other things. The oil filter adapter is made as part of the oil cooler. It is plastic. The oil cooler sits in the middle of the V in the v6 engine and has engine coolant flowing through it.

Plastic in the middle of a engine. Nothing can possibly go wrong. (Sarcasm)

2017 jeep wrangler rubicon has oil leaking during the extreme cold weather in Oklahoma. Temperatures stayed below freezing for 120 plus hours. The oil cooler housing is cracked. It is a known issue and covered under the extended warranty. About a $700 to $1000 repair without warranty. Remember, when you buy used, buy the extended warranty.

I have a 2014 and purchased the extended warranty when I purchased it used. Within a month I took it to a dealer to have the oil cooler replaced under warranty. It took me several calls to different dealers to find a dealer that knew about the upgraded replacement cooler. Call around and find someone that has a clue. Ask if they have heard of the issue and if they can give you the part number for the replacement cooler. You may be surprised as I was when some dealers or maintenance managers could not get the correct answer.
