Life Span of a Limited Slip Diff.

Found out today that I have to have my Spicher Limit slip Diff rebuilt. Had the Jeep up on a lift and could turn either rear wheel by itself and the other one would not move, meaning that the clutch packs are shot. I have about 100,000 miles on the diff.

I wonder, if someone puts a lot of miles on a vehicle, would be wise to install a locker instead of a limited slip. The diff is less then 3 years old. It will cost about $300 to get it rebuilt.

AFAIK 100k is about all you'll get out of a LSD. A LSD and a locker can have very different road manners and especially in snow, the locker can make your Jeep act funny.
Act funny like how? :

Cause the rear end to kick out...
If you mean to slew side ways on a slipery surface, like snow, I noticed that with my LSD to a certian extent. I could deal with that.

Do lockers wear out after 100K?

A true locker is not like limited slip. In tight turns on pavement a true locker can make your Jeep crow hop and crab. A true locker making sharp turns on wet pavement at speed can be pure scary if not hazardous. I am not saying they are not safe on the highway but they take getting use to and are not as mild as a limited slip. Anything mechanical wears out sooner or later but a properly maintained locker is very durable and do not have clutches to wear out as a limited slip does. If my choice was rebuilding a LS or installing a locker I would say "locker it boy" without a doubt.

I thought we came to the conclusion, that this test does NOT work with quadra drive...

I hit 100K on my WJ last month and only 200 miles later, my vari-loc went out. So you have quadradrive w/ varilock or do you have a LSD in the rear with something else. Reason I ask, is that the vari-lock is a one piece assembly and that's how they replace them, parts alone are $1250. I bought a new QTII axle with open carrier and I'm dumping an aussie in it.

I called today and asked them if they knew and the guy said he hadn't had one there with the LSD in it, he was 99.9% sure that it was open. There's still that .1% chance though...I'll be pissed if it is.

I have the select trac X-fer case, and had a LSD installed at about 30K.

I hope 100K isn't the magic number. My Jeep just turned 100K on the way to work today but runs like new still. I've replaced front/rear diff fluids (included the mopar FM) and did not see any wear in the gears or metal shavings in the fluid. Transfer case was replaced with NV 247 fluid too. CarFax shows this Jeep was leased, so I don't think there was any off-roading with it. The only noise I hear is probably due to wheel bearing or driveshaft/u-joint.

Are there warning signs before the LSD dies or it something that just happens instantaneously?

TIA

Is it vari-lok (quadradrive) or a different LSD ?
I had an after market Spicher LSD installed.

JCG02 Limited, I did not notice anything different when driving to indicate that the LSD was bad. the only way I knew was when it was on the lift and I turned the tires.
