My jeep is possessed by the devil.

I beat the life out of her wheeling saturday and the electrical gremlins began to test my nerves

first i went to crank it in the morning and it would turn over but it woudln't fire. i'd stop cranking, try again, and it would fire right up. i'm thinking fuel filter at this point. no biggie.

then two fuses fell out.... ok, also not a big deal... easy fix.

then when i would romp on the gas the engine would act just like a carb'd engine does when it's not tuned right and it would die momentarily.... i'd then let off the gas or feather it a little and it would do fine. odd. water in the gas? dirty fuel filter? or satan himself playing games with my jeep and i?

ok then the one that takes the cake.

i get home and turn the jeep off and remove the key.... except the jeep's not turned off... it's still running... like a champ.... in fact i drove it around the block just for kicks.... ran like a champ.... hummm....

so after yanking the wire off the coil and disconnecting my battery i'm thinking ignition switch is bad at the very least.....

advance auto... $20 or so

has anyone replaced this? if so could you let me know what i'm in for? i'm usually the kind of person to just start tearing things apart and figure things out on my own but at this point i'm pretty frustrated and don't want to waste a day on a 30 minute project.

-Erik <--- going to swap in a tj ignition cylinder while i'm at it... mine is filled with mud :(

Just looked this up:

The ignition switch is mounted on the lower portion of the steering column and is connected to the steering lock by a remote actuator rod.

REMOVAL

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Remove lower instrument panel trim panel, if equipped.
  3. Place ignition in Off-Unlock position and remove switch attaching screws.
  4. Disconnect switch from control rod and electrical connector from switch, then remove switch from steering column.
INSTALLATION

  1. Move switch slider to Accessory position.
  2. Engage remote actuator rod into switch slider and position ignition switch onto steering column. Do not move switch slider when positioning ignition switch onto steering column jacket.
  3. Install and torque switch retaining screws to 35 inch lbs.
  4. Connect electrical connector onto switch.
  5. Connect battery ground cable and check ignition switch for proper operation.
  6. Install lower instrument panel trim panel, if equipped.

now i'm scared. i could have sworn i unplugged that thing when i couldn't get the jeep to turn off. i hope my computer isn't messed up again.

ugh

is it possible for the jeep to continue to run if the computer had a short and the ignition was in the off position or does the key kill all exlectrical connections that the computer needs to operate?
