This past weekend I went to open the hood and low and behold the release handle snapped. At first I thought it was the cable, but its the lower open end piece on the cable retainer built into the handle itself. Unfortunately you can't just purchase a new handle(suppose you could get one from a JY) so i had to buy a new cable/handle assembly. When i recieved the cable assembly i noticed the cable had squeeze connect fittings and the cable end slips into the handle. So all i had to do is remove the trim, remove the 3 bolts holding the handle to the body, release the cable from the old one and slide the old cable into the new handle. Waalaa! Now I have an extra cable should the original ever break. Just in case anybody ever breaks their handle, hope this helps.

I heard that! I've had to replace a couple XJ cables as well. Fricken bear trying to finnagle in under the dash. Order all my oem stuff from Berry Chrysler in Texas(aka jeepoemparts.com). It was $36 for the assembly and they usually overnight or two day the shipping. Retail around here was around $60. Also if you're looking for cheap Hemi badges, they have them for $5. The ones off a 07-11 Challenger.

Lol, I did that on my very first '89 xj. Then installed a Posi-lock for the front vacuum disco D30 and it got to be too many handles lol. I prefer to keep things clean and stock appearing when possible.

I just recently purchased a Crown Automotive assembly from 4wd Parts. I returned it and waiting on an exchange because the plastic was weak when you pulled the lever, the cable would slip out because the plastic would give and bend. The new one will probably be the same, but we'll see. The part number for that is 55394495AB.
