I put transmission fluid in my brake fluid?

Hey guys so I screwed up. I had surgery and I'm out of school for a while. Well anyway I decided to work on my Jeep. I noticed my break fluid was a little low but instead of noticing that was break fluid reservoir when I was on painkillers my stupid self thought it was power steering fluid reservoir. Well any way I messed up and don't know what to do?

If it just happened, and you havent driven any or done anything that would push the fluid out of the resevoir, I would get a turkey baster and suck as much of the fluid out as possible. maybe refill with brake fluid again and suck all out, then fill to the correct level.

If its pushed into the cylinder/brake lines already, then a full flush is probably in order... I have no idea what effect transmission fluid would have in a braking system...

POL fluids are antagonistic to brake system seals - if you've used the brakes after adding ATF, a full vacuum or pressure flush is in order (drain the reservoir, refill with fresh fluid, and either vacuum at each wheel or pressure-bleed from the top until you get fresh fluid at each wheel.)

You can probably get away with the reservoir draw/fill if you haven't used it yet - but I'd be a bit paranoid, and if it's been more than four years since you've done it, you're probably due for a brake fluid flush anyhow (brake fluid is hygroscopic - picks up moisture from humidity. And, it gets 'wear contaminants' from the brake system in normal operation. I typically recommend a five-year interval for brake flushes.)

It's easy enough to do, but don't "gravity bleed" if you're trying to flush. Use a vacuum kit or a pressure kit (if you use a vacuum kit, it's still a two-man job, but one man just has to keep the master cylinder topped off.)

That is about the worst possible thing you can do to a brake system. Petroleum based fluids will swell all the seals and o-rings in a brake system rendering them useless.

Including but not limited to the pistons in the master
O-rings and v-seal in the combo valve
Any seals in the ABS pump
Caliper piston seals
Flex lines
wheel cylinder seals

Depending on how far the contamination has migrated or how you plan to remove it, depends on how many components you get to replace. If you're lucky, it may be as small as just the master and combo valve, if not so lucky, anything in the brake system that has a seal in it.

Again, NO seals in the brake system that come into contact with BRAKE FLUID are COMPATIBLE with any petroleum based product.

Damn! The school of hard knocks can really suck sometimes.

Two lessons here:
Incompatible fluids don't play well together.
Don't operate or work on equipment when impaired. What you consider "impaired" needs to be reexamined.

Good luck.

This is not good!

Any rubber in the brake system (hoses, o-rings, seals) that come into contact with petroleum based chmicals will swell drastically. At the very least I would replace the master cylined and flush the system several times over with clean brake fluid. That is only if you haven't driven it. If you have driven it, you may very well be in for a world of hurt, it just depends on how far the trans fluid got through the system.

EDIT- DOH! I didn't read past the original post, Blaine beat me to it...

Read his (OP) post again....very closely. I'm not exactly sure what he did.....I don't think the painkillers were out of his system by the time he posted.
Did he put Brake Fluid in the Power Steering Reservoir? Or did he put Power Steering Fluid in the Brake Fluid Reservoir?
Maybe, he put the lime in the coconut.....Did he notice himself drinking it all up?

You Sob hahahaha I put ATF+4 in my break fluid. ATF+4 can be your for transmission fluid and power steering fluid.
