how to measure axle shaft length for narrowed housing

hi folks,

i recently picked up a narrowed d44 out of a waggy.

PO said he took 4" out of it.

Need to order some axles for it

my questions:

- how do i properly measure the length of axle needed? while i assume PO took 4" out, how can i make sure minus 4" from stock is the correct length?

- how much wiggle room is there is axle length?
i.e the stock long side of my d44 is 33.19"
if the PO took 4" (more or less) out,
would a 29.5" axle work? how about a a 28.7"
or do i need exactly 29.19" ?

thanks for any insight..

how to measure axle shaft length for narrowed housing

couple answers i found elsewhere while searching for the answer

figured id add them to my own question if anyone stumbles across this in the future

to measure for front axle shaft length when not knowing the length of axle shaft needed:

- from the center line of vertical diff cover bolts on the outside (left and right) edges of the cover to inner edge of 'C' + 5.75"

or

- Measure from the inside of the carrier cap to the inside of the 'C' and add 4''.

Back into the measurement from the side that hasn't been cut.

Measure from the outer edge of the side gears to the end of the tube within the inner knuckle. Measure the same side inner axleshaft from the end of the splines to the center of the ujoint. Subtract the first measurement from the second and note the difference.

Now measure the other side equivalent of the first measurement. Add the difference you had to this number and you should be close enough to the correct length for the new axleshaft.

Thanks all...

If I get a chance this weekend, Im going to try all the different techniques on my short side (un-narrowed side) and see how in line they are with the stock length shaft.

much appreciated folks...
